Columbia Prepares to Celebrate 46th Annual Jubilee Festival Honoring Black History and Culture

Columbia Gears Up for the 46th Annual Jubilee Festival

Excitement is buzzing in Columbia, S.C., as the city prepares for its beloved Jubilee Festival this coming Saturday, September 21, 2024. This year marks the 46th annual celebration of Black History & Culture, and it’s set to take place at the historic Mann-Simons Site, a location deeply rooted in the African American experience.

A Celebration of History

The Mann-Simons Site has been part of Columbia’s narrative since 1843, serving as a home for families who challenged societal norms in their time. Midwife Celia Mann and boatman Ben Delane resided there during a period when many African Americans were enslaved, making the site not just a backdrop, but a vital component of the stories that the festival aims to honor.

In the late 1970s, as the threat to demolish this piece of history loomed, passionate citizens rallied to preserve it. Their efforts not only saved the home but also paved the way for the inaugural Jubilee Festival in 1978, a tradition that celebrates African American culture and creativity.

What to Expect at the Festival

This year, the Jubilee Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., packed with a vibrant variety of entertainment for all ages. With over a dozen food vendors offering delectable bites, attendees will find everything from savory Southern dishes to sweet treats. The lineup features musicians, artisans, dancers, and storytellers, creating an event that’s as immersive as it is entertaining.

Headlining the festival is local R&B star TiffanyJ, who will showcase her talents alongside renowned acts like Master Splnta, Francis Marion University YGB Gospel Choir, Nahi Grūv, and Black Nerd Mafia. TiffanyJ, a member of the steering committee, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “There’s so much diversity in Black culture. Not only will you get somebody like me that does R&B/soul music, but we also have African drumming, a fashion show, hip-hop, and jazz.”

Family-Friendly Fun

The festival is also committed to being family-friendly, providing a special Kids Zone where young attendees, dubbed “Jubilee Juniors,” can enjoy free books, face painting, and even an ice cream truck! There’s no shortage of activities to keep the whole family engaged, including guided tours of the Mann-Simons House, which showcases the stories nestled within its walls.

A Mission Beyond Celebration

According to Emily Brown, the marketing director of Historic Columbia, the festival is more than just a celebration. “The mission of Historic Columbia is not only to preserve places but to preserve stories that connect us in the present and inspire our shared future,” she said. “This festival serves as a powerful tribute to the rich Black history and the significant contributions of African Americans here in Columbia.”

Join the Celebration!

As the festival gets closer, all eyes are on the skies for what promises to be a delightful day. Expect mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of rain, but with a high of 79°F and light winds, conditions should be perfect for an outdoor celebration. And even if the temperatures dip a bit in the evening, with lows around 65°F, the vibrant atmosphere is sure to keep everyone warm.

So whether you’re looking to enjoy some great food, soak in the rich history, or jam to some incredible live music, mark your calendars for September 21st! With an event that has captivated the hearts of locals for nearly 50 years, the Jubilee Festival promises to be an experience you won’t want to miss.

Let’s come together to celebrate, honor, and learn from the past as we look towards a bright future filled with culture and creativity!
