COLUMBIA, SC: A Heartfelt Month of Remembrance
As the holiday season approaches, Columbia is gearing up to honor a very special group of individuals—our Veterans. Governor Henry McMaster has officially proclaimed December as “Wreaths Across America Month.” This meaningful recognition brings to light the efforts of an organization dedicated to ensuring that our Veterans are honored throughout the country, and right here in the beautiful state of South Carolina.
A Special Presentation
Just this past Monday morning, local representatives Micah Caskey and Chris Wooten had the pleasure of presenting the proclamation to Carol Davis, the local coordinator for Wreaths Across America. In a heartfelt ceremony, Davis highlighted how crucial it is for each of us to take a moment to recognize, remember, and appreciate not just our Veterans but also those who have passed on. “This gives us an opportunity at all Veteran cemeteries and where Veterans are buried throughout SC to honor them. This proclamation is a sign that SC loves her Veterans,” she remarked passionately.
The Big Day: December 14th
Mark your calendars! On December 14th, a massive event will take place across the nation, with over two million volunteers laying wreaths at the graves of Veterans. Here in our local community, a dedicated group will gather at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at noon to place over 13,000 wreaths. “And it’s important for us to come there. As individuals and families. And bring the children. We need to remember those that served, honor those that are serving now, and to teach our children that freedom is not free,” Davis emphasized.
Sponsoring a Wreath
Each beautiful wreath is available for sponsorship at a cost of just $17, which goes directly to supporting this incredible initiative. Representative Wooten shared his excitement about the local community’s willingness to step up. “I’ve been a part of the ‘Wreaths Across America’ event in D.C. at Arlington,” he remarked. “Seeing the massive amounts of people show up to honor our Veterans is awe-inspiring. To see that on a state level, in South Carolina, is truly touching. The fact that people show up to put out those 13,000 wreaths, and that’s just here at Fort Jackson; we can’t forget that other cemeteries across the state partake as well.”
Patriotism in Action
The enthusiasm demonstrated by the community is not lost on Wooten. As a former Marine, he recognizes the effort and heart behind this initiative. “South Carolinians really care about their Veterans. It’s an honor to be a part of that,” he noted, showing his pride for the state and its citizens. It’s clear—the commitment to honoring and supporting our Veterans runs deep.
