After Over Five Decades Whit-Ash Furnishings in Columbia Set to Close its Doors Soon

A long-standing furniture store in Columbia, Whit-Ash Furnishings is preparing to bid farewell. After over five decades of serving Columbia residents with their furniture needs, the store has announced it will soon be closing its doors.

Difficult Decision to Close

Harold Whitney Black and Gerald Black, the brothers behind the legacy of Whit-Ash Furnishings, announced in a letter to their customers that they have decided to close the store. While an exact date is yet to be decided, it’s clear that the infamous furniture store will no longer be a part of the Vista community. The letter expressed their sadness over this decision, acknowledging the hard truth that they must close their doors forever.

A Long-Standing Part of the Community

Opened in 1973, Whit-Ash Furnishings has been a business cornerstone in Columbia for over 50 years. Starting on St. Andrews Road, the store shifted to its present location on Gervais Street in 1974. Even as the district underwent numerous transformations over the decades and other businesses came and went, Whit-Ash Furnishings remained a constant.

Contributions to District Retail

With its vast range of furniture and previously, diamond engagement rings and jewelry, Whit-Ash Furnishings drew in diverse customers contributing significantly to the retail aspect of the Vista. Local business owners expressed their regret at the imminent closing of the store. Many residents remember Whit-Ash as a stable establishment amidst the evolving business landscape of the district.

The Legacy of Whitney Ash Furnishing

In an interview, Harold Whitney Black had once shared his journey from a professional photographer to a successful entrepreneur. Driven by the desire to earn more, he left photography to start the furniture business with his brother, Gerald Black. At one stage in the late 70s, their furniture store was the largest independent, non-franchised furniture business in the state.

Reflecting on the Closure

The news of Whit-Ash Furnishings’ closure has sparked reflections about the changing neighborhood, the shifting dynamics of the retail landscape, and the reality of businesses having to close down. Local business owners expressed hope and curiosity about what will finally occupy the significant space left behind by Whit-Ash. However, it is destined that Whit-Ash Furnishings will long be remembered as a core part of the district’s retail history.

For updates regarding the closing date, the owners suggested keeping an eye on their official communications and social media channels.
