Columbia Children’s Theatre Faces Financial Crisis: Urgent Community Support Needed

Columbia, S.C. — In a stunning announcement that has sent ripples through the community, the Columbia Children’s Theatre (CCT) finds itself grappling with a financial crisis for the first time in two decades. With the clock ticking, they must raise a staggering $50,000 by January 1st to ensure the beloved theatre’s future isn’t left hanging in the balance.

Community Appeal by Artistic Director

Artistic Director Jerry Stevenson took to the theatre’s Facebook page to share the distressing situation, calling upon the community for help. He expressed heartfelt sentiments, stating, “Last year, the closure of Richland Mall left CCT without a home. This unexpected blow required us to find a new space quickly, bringing unforeseen financial challenges.”

As if losing their home wasn’t tough enough, the ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are still being felt. Stevenson explained, “Although we’ve taken significant steps to restructure the organization and strengthen our financial footing, the costs of this transition have placed us in a critical position.” The theatre, now based on Chris Drive in West Columbia, doesn’t currently have a performance space, creating even more financial troubles.

Stevenson’s Personal Investment

In a plea that resonates deeply, Stevenson revealed, “I have put my entire retirement savings from when I was in Chicago into this company, so HELP!” His dedication is admirable, and the current situation is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by non-profits everywhere. “Our problem now is we are renting two spaces and none of those are really generating revenue. We are still having to go out and rent these high school theatres, deals with Harbison, so basically COVID and the mall closing, our rent tripled,” he lamented.

Adaptation Amidst Challenges

The theatre’s innovative spirit shines through as they adapt to their circumstances. “We are largely going into auditoriums with the school districts,” Stevenson explained. “We have a partnership with District One, District Two … they just opened their new performing arts center, we have a big partnership with them, Harbison Theatre, so really any place in town.” But the search for suitable venues comes at a cost, and this scramble has placed the future of Columbia Children’s Theatre in jeopardy.

Fears of Drastic Cuts

If the fundraising goal isn’t met by New Year’s Day, the consequences could be dire. While immediate closure isn’t anticipated, Stevenson warned, “I don’t think total closure is on the rise immediately, but we would have to lose a staff member and then one of the three remaining of us would have to absorb their duties.” It’s a delicate balance and one that has the community watching closely.

A Hopeful Future Despite Uncertainty

As Columbia Children’s Theatre approaches its 20th anniversary, there is a flicker of hope. Stevenson remains optimistic and is determined to keep the show going with holiday performances planned. “We will do everything we can to continue our mission of bringing joy and magic to the Midlands,” he affirmed.

Your Help Needed!

This is where you, dear reader, can make a difference! Columbia Children’s Theatre is reaching out for support, urging the community to stand behind them during this challenging time.
