Columbia, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as the University of South Carolina Marching Band prepares for their upcoming performance in one of the most iconic parades in the nation—the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. With only a month to go, the band is taking to the streets of downtown Columbia for a special dress rehearsal—aptly titled “Big Apple Sneak Peek” on October 26.
This event promises to be a grand spectacle featuring over 375 talented student musicians. They will march down Greene Street, starting at Pickens Street, before turning onto Sumter Street and finally arriving at the beautiful State House. The parade kicks off at 2 p.m., and afterward, everyone is invited to gather on the State House lawn for a free concert!
The enthusiasm is palpable, especially since this year marks the 104-year-old band’s very first appearance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, which takes place on November 28. Out of over 100 applicants, the Carolina Band earned its spot, showcasing their hard work and dedication to music.
Band Director Jay Jacobs has been leading the charge, ensuring that the students are not only well-prepared but spirited and enthusiastic about their upcoming performance. Since last year, they’ve been practicing their routine, which spans the 2.5-mile parade route, and they are eager to present their school pride on national television.
“We’ll incorporate a mix of songs that reflect our USC spirit throughout the parade,” said Jacobs in a previous interview. He emphasizes the importance of highlighting the school’s identity in their performance to make the event even more special.
It’s been quite a journey getting to this point, especially when it comes to fundraising. The band has raised over $420,000, bringing them to about 65% of their total travel expenses. The fundraising journey has truly been a community affair, with local support pouring in to aid these musicians.
As the band gears up for their rehearsal, those in Columbia have the perfect opportunity to witness these phenomenal student performers firsthand. The chance to see these dedicated individuals practicing their routine before they take on New York City is something that shouldn’t be missed!
Mark your calendars for October 26, and come out to show your support! Whether you grab a spot along the parade route or settle in at the State House for the concert, this is a chance to cheer on our local talent as they prepare to put their best foot forward on a national stage.
The spotlight will soon shine bright on Columbia as “The Mighty Sound of the Southeast” gets ready to represent not just their university, but the entire state in one of America’s most beloved traditions. So grab your friends and family and head out to cheer on our incredibly talented marching band!
This year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is set to attract around 28 million viewers on NBC, which means the USC Band will not only be performing for the spectators lining the streets but also for millions watching from the comfort of their homes. What a fantastic opportunity for these young musicians!
With exciting preparations underway, it’s clear that Columbia is in for a fabulous show. Go Gamecocks!
