Columbia, SC – A heart-wrenching accident early Sunday morning has left the community in shock as a woman lost her life in a multi-vehicle collision. The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Monica Wright, a 48-year-old resident of Columbia. Coroner Robbie Baker described the incident as an unfortunate accident that occurred around 2 a.m. at the busy intersection of U.S. 378/Broad Street and S.C. 261/South Kings Highway, near Shaw Air Force Base.
Wright tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crash. While the precise details surrounding the accident are still emerging, Coroner Baker confirmed that she was the only fatality reported. Currently, it’s unclear if Monica was a driver or a passenger in one of the vehicles involved, and further information about her use of a seat belt has not been disclosed.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol, along with the coroner’s office, is actively investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision. Details regarding what exactly caused these vehicles to crash are currently unavailable, and authorities are working diligently to piece together the events of that fateful night.
In line with standard procedures, an autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to determine the full extent of Wright’s injuries and to gain further understanding of her passing.
The sad reality is that Wright is not an isolated incident. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS), a staggering 905 people have lost their lives on South Carolina roads in 2024 alone. This tragic statistic highlights the pressing issue of road safety in the state, with last year’s death toll standing at 1,030 lives. The numbers are especially concerning in Sumter County, where reports indicate at least 20 fatalities have occurred on local roads this year. This reflects a report of 30 deaths in the same county for 2023.
Local advocates and officials are raising awareness about the need for safe driving practices and measures that can be taken to prevent such tragic accidents in the future. With the continuous climb in road-related fatalities, the community is urged to remain vigilant and take precautions when traveling on our busy roads.
In the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy, friends, family, and neighbors are coming together to support one another as they grapple with the loss. Funeral arrangements for Monica Wright will likely be announced soon, and many are preparing to pay their respects during this difficult time.
As updates continue to unfold, it’s important for the public to stay informed about the situation. In breaking news scenarios, it can often be challenging to ascertain facts immediately, but rest assured, reliable information will be shared promptly as it becomes available.
Keep an eye out for updates, as details regarding the investigation and the community response will be reported as this story develops. This just goes to show how swiftly and unexpectedly life can change, reminding us to cherish every moment on and off the road.
Stay safe, Columbia.
