West Columbia is enjoying its moment in the sun, thanks to the beloved City Limits Barbeque. This charming barbecue joint has recently caught the attention of foodies across the United States by landing a spot on a prestigious restaurant list that highlights the best dining experiences nationwide. Located at 1119 Methodist Park Road, City Limits has found itself recognized for its mouthwatering offerings and welcoming atmosphere.
On a sunny Monday, the excitement was palpable as City Limits was announced as one of the 50 favorite restaurants in the country for 2024. This recognition came from an annual list that aims to shine a light on exceptional culinary experiences around the U.S. What makes this achievement even more special is that City Limits is the only restaurant from the Midlands to earn a place on this year’s list. In fact, the only other South Carolina establishment to receive the honor was Lost Isle, located on Johns Island.
What’s all the fuss about? According to a glowing review, the pitmaster at City Limits, Robbie Robinson, has really made his mark with his famous South Carolina-style chopped pork sandwich. Described as a “master class,” this dish features delightful bits of cracklings mixed into juicy meat, perfectly complemented by a scoop of creamy, finely chopped coleslaw. But the culinary delights don’t stop there! Robinson also knows how to incorporate flavors from Texas, serving up snappy Hill Country sausages and meaty beef ribs that folks can’t get enough of, often selling out before the day is done. And for dessert, the warm peach cobbler comes highly recommended.
Robinson kickstarted City Limits as a food truck back in 2016, where friends and family would delight in his unique barbecue flavors on the go. Fast forward to 2023, and City Limits found a cozy brick-and-mortar home on Methodist Park Road. Known for its Texas-style brisket, Carolina-style pulled pork, and mouthwatering side dishes, the restaurant quickly became a favorite among the locals and tourists alike.
Robinson’s talents haven’t gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, he was named a finalist for the esteemed Best Chef-Southeast at the James Beard Foundation Awards, a sign that he is making significant waves in the culinary world. Furthermore, in August, Southern Living magazine recognized City Limits as the No. 4 Best New BBQ Joint, solidifying its status as a must-visit destination.
In a heartfelt Instagram story shared on a Tuesday morning, Robinson expressed his gratitude to his family, workers, and loyal customers for their continued support. “When we get a little attention, I’m thankful,” he said sincerely. “I’m so thankful… We are not going to stop grinding away and trying to do what we do. I’m going to wake up every day, grind, and serve y’all the best bite of food that I can.” It’s clear that the passion and commitment to quality food remain at the heart of City Limits.
As City Limits Barbeque continues to shine on the national stage, it remains a cherished spot for locals as well. The restaurant is typically open only on Saturdays and Sundays, making visits feel like a special treat for the community. For anyone looking for a taste of a true barbecue experience in West Columbia, City Limits should definitely be at the top of the list!
As the accolades continue to roll in, one thing is for sure: City Limits Barbeque has certainly carved out a special place in our hearts and on our plates!
