In an exciting turn of events in South Carolina high school golf, Chapin and Lexington high schools have claimed victory in their respective championships, setting the stage for a thrilling state finals later this month. Just when you thought the competition couldn’t get any better, these schools showcased their talent and determination, making their communities proud.
On a sunny Monday, Chapin High School hit the golf course with all guns blazing, securing the Class 5A Division II Lower State championship. But it wasn’t an easy road; the team faced an uphill battle as they were trailing by eight shots going into the back nine. With grit and teamwork, Chapin pulled off an impressive comeback, finishing with a total score of 311 and clinching the title by a solid five shots over Conway.
Among the standout players for Chapin was Mia Andrade, who fired an impressive round of 73 to share the medalist title with Conway’s Gracyn Cox. Not to be outdone, Chapin’s Lilly Reed Black ended just one shot behind them, while Reagan Haggard contributed an 80 to finish ninth in the individual standings.
It’s worth noting that Caroline Hawkins from Blythewood earned the medalist honors, making the competition even fiercer with her fantastic score of 71. Blythewood didn’t just stop there; their performance secured them a spot in the state championship as they finished fourth overall. Adding to the excitement, River Bluff placed third with a score of 338, also qualifying for the state finals, with standout player Caitlyn Gaines scoring a remarkable 72.
Meanwhile, in the Class 4A Upper State championship, Camden managed to secure their place in the state finals with a total score of 350, claiming the third position. Team members including Lakin Atkinson, who shot 81, showcased their talent well, tying for sixth with AC Flora’s Merritt Barbery. AC Flora itself, while finishing fifth with a score of 385, saw player Louise Vipperman scoring 82 to claim eighth overall.
