Cayce’s heritage was on full display during Tartan Day South, a four-day celebration of the traditional cultures of Ireland, Scotland, and England. From April 4 to April 7, the city came alive with music, dance, sports, and much more, showcasing the rich tapestry of Celtic culture.
The celebration kicked off on Thursday, April 4 at Steel Hands Brewery. The evening was filled with the melodious sounds of Celtic Conundrum, a band known for their vibrant interpretation of traditional Celtic music.
On Friday, April 5, the Celtic concert held at the Icehouse Amphitheater became the center of attraction. The concert featured prominent bands such as Eireann’s Call, Tuatha Dea, and SYR, each offering audiences a mesmerizing experience of great Irish music. The evening of music filled the air with lilting melodies and created a powerful sense of community among attendees.
Arguably the most anticipated event of the entire celebration was the Highland Games and Celtic Festival which took place on Saturday, April 6. The event was hosted at the Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce from 9 a.m. onwards. The day was jam-packed with a wide range of traditional activities and exhibitions.
Among the crowd’s favorites were the highland athletics, which saw competitors testing their strength in traditional sports. Traditional dancing exhibitions gave spectators a glimpse into the cultural essence of Celtic nations. Mass pipe bands provided a stirring soundtrack to the day, their powerful music echoing through the air. Mid-day parades, featuring the haunting melodies of Irish bagpipes and different clans, added to the spectacle.
Other highlights included sheep and duck dog herding and birds of prey exhibitions, which drew enthusiastic crowds. The classic British car show was a hit with automotive enthusiasts, while the Celtic marketplace offered a variety of fascinating wares. Younger visitors were kept entertained with kiddie rides. Educational offerings included Scottish military history presentations, blacksmith exhibitions, and a colonial village with various vendors.
Tartan Day South is a tribute to the profound influence Celtic heritage has had on the American cultural landscape. It gives community members an opportunity to appreciate and partake in a variety of exciting recreational activities steeped in tradition and history.
As the city of Cayce put its own spin on a traditional Celtic celebration, the event helped to bring the community together, foster a greater understanding of diverse cultures and traditions, and create unforgettable memories for every participant.
