On July 15, 2024, the Cayce Fire Department, a dedicated team serving Lexington County and various communities in South Carolina, received a significant financial boost. A $32,067 grant was awarded by the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and the local Firehouse Subs restaurant located in Cayce. The department plans to use the funds to purchase nine new sets of turnout gear for their frontline firefighters.
Turnout gear, often the first line of defense for firefighters, protects them from the various perils they face in the line of duty. Given the demanding nature of their work, both in terms of the volume of emergency calls and rigorous training schedules, this essential equipment can quickly show signs of wear, thereby compromising its protective qualities.
Furthermore, to safeguard firefighters from cancer-causing substances often encountered during house fires, many departments aim to provide two sets of turnouts to each crew member. This allows firefighters to alternate between sets, ensuring one is always clean and ready-to-wear while the other is undergoing a thorough wash and dry process. The grant will substantially support the Cayce Fire Department in achieving this goal.
Founded in 2005 by former firefighters and Firehouse Subs founders, Chris Sorensen and Robin Sorensen, the Foundation emerged in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. While aiding in the Mississippi disaster relief efforts, firehouse founders saw a need for a more substantial, sustained investment in first responder and community safety. Thus, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation was born.
The Cayce Fire Department is a testament to the foundation’s commitment to enhancing the life-saving capabilities and safety of first responders across the country.
