Carroll County High School Football Updates: Early Season Highlights

In Westminster, the excitement of high school sports is heating up as teams across the county make their marks in the early weeks of the season. Among the standout performances, the South Carroll volleyball team has taken the spotlight with a perfect start at 3-0 under new coach Kristine Keck. The Cavaliers have opened the season with impressive wins, including a definitive three-set victory over county rivals, the Westminster Owls, to kick off their conference play on September 12.

Not only did the Cavaliers make a statement against Westminster, but they followed it up with another strong performance against Manchester Valley, adding yet another three-set win to their record. A key player for South Carroll has been returning All-County hitter Elaina Murphy, who has been instrumental in leading the team.

Meanwhile, other teams are also making headlines. The Liberty girls soccer team has maintained an unbeaten streak by defeating Winters Mill 4-2, handing their rivals their first loss this season. On the boys’ side, the South Carroll boys soccer team has impressed with a flawless record of 5-0, having outscored their opponents 19-1, sealing their last four games with shutouts.

In cross country, the Century girls team claimed the division title at the Bull Run Invitational, with standout runner Taylor Colson finishing first individually. Meanwhile, the Liberty football team celebrated their first victory of the season, thanks to the efforts of quarterback Chase Miller, who threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns, leading his team to a thrilling 31-26 win over Manchester Valley.

This week also saw notable individual performances. In field hockey, Caelin Lopes from South Carroll recorded her 100th career save, and Gabi Thomas from Westminster scored a crucial goal in double overtime, securing a hard-fought victory over a previously unbeaten opponent.

As the fall sports season progresses, local high school teams are showing they are ready to compete and make their mark in the county and beyond.
