Guess what, Columbia? There’s some pretty exciting news coming from the Riverbanks Zoo! For the first time in over a decade, the zoo has added a new feathered friend to its family, and this one is sure to steal your heart! The award-winning bird team at the zoo has successfully hatched a Toco Toucan chick. Can you believe it? This little one is just too cute!
Let’s take a trip back in time for a moment. It all started back in June 2019 when a pair of Toco Toucans, Ramsay and Dora, were introduced to each other. This was a significant milestone for the bird team, as for years they have been hoping to see a chick emerge from this pairing. Both Ramsay and Dora had arrived at the zoo not too long before they met—Ramsay coming in July 2018 and Dora in January 2019.
If you think about it, that’s a lot of time for the zookeepers and bird lovers to be sitting on the edge of their seats. Finally, their patience has paid off! As Riverbanks Bird Keeper, Amy Gooding, shares excitedly, “I always hoped this day would come, but honestly didn’t think it would. I screamed for joy when I found out we had a fertile egg, and now to see this little guy hopping around…it’s why I got into this field.” Can’t you just picture the joy as they watched the chick break free?
Now, here’s the best part: the little Toco Toucan chick is not just an adorable addition to the zoo family, but it also holds a special place in the hearts of the keepers who care for it. The announcement comes with a promise—guests can plan to see the new chick on exhibit in the spring of 2025. That gives everyone something to look forward to! Just imagine taking your family or friends to see this vibrant new member of the zoo while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
Toco Toucans are famous for their stunning colors and large, unique bills that make them stand out among the many species in the bird kingdom. They are native to Central and South America, typically found in tropical forests. Having a chick at Riverbanks Zoo is not just a win for the local community, but it also plays a role in raising awareness about conservation and the needs of these beautiful creatures.
The success of this hatching also showcases the dedication and hard work of the entire bird team at the zoo. Their commitment does not just stop at providing a loving home for these birds; they are also contributing to education and conservation efforts. With the arrival of this little toucan, the hope is strong that more people will become aware of the importance of protecting such vibrant species.
As we eagerly await spring 2025, the spirit of celebration is vibrant in Columbia. So, get ready to make plans for a visit to the Riverbanks Zoo. Whether you’re a local or planning to tour the town, witnessing this beloved bird’s debut will surely be a highlight. It’s moments like this that remind us why we cherish our local zoos and the enriching experiences they provide.
Who’s excited? We sure are! Keep your eyes peeled for updates and don’t miss the chance to see our little feathered superstar as it grows and becomes a beloved part of the Riverbanks Zoo family!
