Legend of Bigfoot Resurfaces with New Sighting in South Carolina

Is Bigfoot Lurking in South Carolina?

It seems that the legend of Bigfoot is alive and well in South Carolina! Nestled in the heart of the Midlands, a recent sighting has reignited the age-old debate about the existence of this elusive creature. On November 2nd, a hunter shared a captivating tale that’s sure to send chills down your spine.

A Hunter’s Frightening Encounter

Identified only as “J.M.,” this brave hunter found himself in a face-to-face stare down with what he claims was none other than Bigfoot! The dramatic moment unfolded at his family’s hunting grounds near Pomaria, approximately 25 miles northwest of Columbia. As dawn broke and the forest was just beginning to wake, he noticed something towering over him— a 7-foot-tall creature with an unmistakably ape-like face, long arms, and hair that appeared to be a shade of brown. Talk about a real-life monster!

J.M. was sitting quietly in his ground blind when he heard a deep grunt followed by a loud stomp. As he turned, there it was, a creature that has haunted folklore for centuries. For about 30 seconds, man and beast exchanged glances, a moment that felt infinite before the creature turned and loped away into the thick woods. “I’m a police officer and had no clue what to make of it,” J.M. reported. “At this point, as much as I didn’t want to admit it, I am convinced it was a Bigfoot.”

Bigfoot Field Researchers Weigh In

The Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) has taken an interest in this sighting. Their investigator, Matthew Moneymaker, believes J.M.’s account is credible based on his experience as a long-time hunter on the same property. This sighting marks one of the few Class A sightings reported to BFRO this year and adds to the growing list of Bigfoot sightings in South Carolina.

More Than Just a Legend

While this sighting is recent, the legend of Bigfoot has been around for centuries! From the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas where Yetis are rumored to roam, to the dense forests of Washington State where sightings are over 700, the existence of this hairy giant stretches across the globe. In South Carolina alone, there have been 59 reported sightings of Bigfoot since 1964!

Let’s go back to February 2023 when yet another encounter was reported in Union County. A couple claimed they were repeatedly visited by a 9-foot-tall black Bigfoot that didn’t seem too friendly. Imagine having a creature taunting you and your dog every night; this couple didn’t have a “Harry and the Hendersons” experience at all, instead, they felt a chilling presence hovering around them.

Celebrating the Cryptid

Bigfoot isn’t just a myth to some residents in South Carolina; it’s a festival waiting to happen! In Oconee County, locals celebrate Bigfoot with an annual SC Bigfoot Festival that is just as exciting as it sounds. There’s even more to South Carolina’s cryptid folklore— from the eerie Lizard Man of Lee County known for its red eyes, to the spooky Boo Hag from Gullah/Geechee culture. It appears that whatever the Palmetto State is, it’s more than just its beaches and swamps, it’s teeming with cryptid tales!

What Lies Ahead

As we consider the many sightings and the lore that surrounds these mysterious beings, one thing is clear: Bigfoot is woven into the fabric of South Carolina’s culture. As more sightings continue to emerge, the discussion around this legendary creature is far from over. If you hear of any more strange sounds in the woods or catch sight of big, furry feet in the forest, remember to share your story. Who knows, you could become part of the next big chapter in the South’s Bigfoot tales!
