In a recent development, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department has reported an arrest linked with a foot pursuit that led to the tragic death of K9 patrol officer Wick. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Thomas Taylor, was apprehended in the early hours of the morning from an apartment complex on Ripplemeyer Avenue.
According to the information released by the Sheriff’s Department, Taylor had allegedly stolen a work van after the employees negligently left the keys inside. After being pursued by law enforcement, Taylor abandoned the vehicle along Interstate 77 and chose to continue on foot.
This subsequent foot chase involved K9 Wick and his handler. Tragically, during the chase, Wick’s leash broke, causing him to get hit by a passing vehicle. The incident resulted in the unfortunate demise of the beloved K9 officer.
Taylor has been charged with several severe felonies, including first-degree burglary, grand larceny, and failure to stop for blue lights – a local term for police sirens. Following his arrest, Taylor has been taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
In remembrance of K9 Wick’s service and sacrifice, the Sheriff’s Department will conduct a memorial service. The service, which is open for public to pay their respects, will be held at Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Irmo at 10 a.m.
K9 Wick’s untimely death is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, both human and canine, in their duty to protect and serve communities.
As the case progresses, more information about Taylor’s motives and the circumstances that led to Wick’s death is expected to surface. For the time being, the local community mourns the loss of a valiant comrade who gave his life in the line of duty.
