In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the world of music has lost a shining star. Angie Stone, a beloved 63-year-old Grammy Award-nominated neo-soul singer, tragically passed away in a fatal vehicle collision on Saturday morning. Known for her soulful voice and impactful songs, Stone’s legacy in the music industry will be cherished by many.
The accident took place at about 4:25 a.m. on Interstate 65, roughly five miles south of Montgomery, Alabama. Reports indicate that Stone was traveling in a 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, heading to Atlanta after performing at a concert the previous night. Unfortunately, the van flipped over before being struck by a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck, driven by a 33-year-old man from Texas.
Despite the presence of eight other passengers in the van, who thankfully survived the accident, Stone was pronounced dead at the scene. Her untimely death has left a deep void in the hearts of family, friends, and fans everywhere.
Just hours before the tragic accident, Stone had been preparing to shine in front of an audience once again. She was scheduled to perform during the halftime show of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball championship game in Baltimore on the very same day. The music world was ready to honor her vibrant talents, but fate had other plans.
Born Angela Laverne Brown in 1961 in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s journey began in church, where she nurtured her love for singing. She later became a part of the hip-hop trio The Sequence, who are best known for their hit “Funk You Up,” which was later sampled by Dr. Dre in “Keep Their Heads Ringin’.” It wasn’t long before Stone moved to New York, where her career blossomed as a solo artist under Sugar Hill Records.
Throughout her illustrious career, Stone produced several notable singles, including “No More Rain,” “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” “More Than a Woman,” and “U-Haul.” Both “More Than a Woman” and “U-Haul” received Grammy nominations, and her albums, Black Diamond and Mahogany Soul, achieved gold status, selling over one million copies combined.
Angie Stone was not only a singer but also made her mark in the film industry, appearing in around 40 movies and TV shows. Her artistic talents earned her admiration from friends and fans alike. Interestingly, she shared a familial bond with fellow artist D’Angelo, with whom she had a son named Michael D’Angelo Archer II.
Stone is survived by her two children, daughter Diamond and son Michael D’Angelo Archer II. As the Alabama Highway Patrol investigates the circumstances of the crash, the world is mourning the loss of an extraordinary talent.
Before her tragic death, Stone was actively involved in her community, having founded Angel Stripes, a national non-profit organization focusing on community partnerships. Her dedication to giving back exemplifies her caring nature.
The outpouring of grief and heartfelt reactions from public figures, including former state representatives, stands as a testament to her enduring impact on many lives. Her publicist shared that Angie Stone’s voice and spirit will indeed live on forever in the hearts of those she touched.
As the music world reflects on her remarkable career, fans everywhere will cherish the melodies and memories forged by this incredible artist. Rest in peace, Angie Stone.
