$65 million Sports Complex slated for Lexington County

$65 million Sports Complex slated for Lexington County

Hot off the Press – July 10, 2024

A new $65 million sports complex to be developed in Lexington County, South Carolina, is well on the way to becoming a reality. This potential hub of local, regional and state athleticism received a recent boost with the securing of $3 million from the newly ratified state budget, falling just $1 million short of initial project estimates. The remaining $62 million are anticipated to come from a mix of local, regional and state funds as well as contributions from the private sector.

Fanning the Flames of Sports Tourism

Having been worked on for the past 4-5 years, the plan is now gaining momentum with the recognition and support of Senator Nikki Setzler. Though the exact location for the proposed Congaree Sports Complex remains undisclosed, Senator Setzler has hinted at either West Columbia or Cayce as potential sites. The development of the complex could significantly bolster sports tourism and bring an economic uptick to these regions. On this note, Senator Setzler stated, “People come in, they stay in hotels, they go to motels, they eat food, they go to retail shops, they go to other facilities within the community and spend their money. It’s a huge economic boost to the Midlands, particularly the Cayce, West Columbia area.”

Construction Blueprint

The project will be built in stages. Initial plans indicate that the first phase will see the construction of eight expansive, multipurpose sports fields kitted out with lights and synthetic turf. The fields will be designed to accommodate baseball, softball, soccer, and lacrosse games. Additionally, there will be two imposing towers housing concessions. According to the application for state funds, the first phase will cost around $25 million, with a chunk of $2 million going towards property and infrastructure.

Phase Two: Indoor Sports Center

The second phase of the complex’s development includes the construction of a mixed-use indoor sports center. This facility is set to house ten regulation-sized basketball courts and twenty volleyball courts, coupled with ample parking space, a running track, and an indoor concession area. Anticipated costs for this second phase stand at $40 million.

Benefits extend beyond Sports

The complex, with easy access to numerous interstate highways, will not only provide a state-of-the-art venue for athletes but also serve as a significant attraction for their parents and sports enthusiasts from across the Southeast. As Senator Setzler finishes his last term, he stands behind this project as a significant potential economic catalyst for the region.

Moving Forward

With the recent allocation from the state budget, the project’s timeline is expected to be expedited, although official timelines or project renderings have not been released yet. Lexington County Recreation Commission will handle the funds raised, with anticipation of contributions from other local entities and the state. The sports complex serves as a testament to the potential of collaboration between state agencies, the local community, and the private sector to enhance regional infrastructure and economic growth.
