In a recent update, the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) reports that charges have been upgraded against a woman involved in a serious collision with a bicyclist in Williamston. The male bicyclist tragically died over a week following the incident.
The collision unfolded on August 21, when emergency services received a distress call at 6:15 p.m. about a man hit by a vehicle while riding his bike. The incident involved an SUV traveling east on Firetower Road near Mountain View Road in Williamston. The SUV reportedly crossed the center line and collided head-on with the west-bound bicyclist.
The Anderson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 59-year-old Anthony Catalfomo. Post the accident, Catalfomo was immediately transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on September 2, at 1:33 p.m.
While Catalfomo’s death was initially classified as accidental, new developments on Thursday indicate that the SUV’s driver, identified as Leeann Moore, is now facing upgraded charges. These charges include felony DUI with death and felony hit and run.
Moore appeared in bond court on Thursday, and her bond was denied. This case serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of impaired driving and the significant legal charges that can arise from such incidents.
This unfortunate incident has shocked the Williamston community. Local cyclists and traffic safety campaigners demand the implementation of stricter traffic regulation enforcement, highlighting the necessity for improved safety for cyclists.
As the South Carolina Highway Patrol continues its investigation into this tragic incident, further details will be awaited. Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of Anthony Catalfomo, emphasizing the need for safer road conditions for cyclists.
Updates on this case will be provided as investigations unfold and more information comes to light.
