South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore Ashlyn Watkins has been named the SEC Player of the Week, marking the fourth Gamecock this season to receive this honor. The league office made the announcement today, highlighting Watkins’ standout performances.
This recognition of Watkins marks the sixth selection for the Gamecocks this season, tying the program’s record for most selections in a single season. Furthermore, Watkins becomes the fourth different player from South Carolina to earn this title during the current season, setting a new record in SEC history.
Watkins made significant contributions coming off the bench in both games, averaging 17.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game, securing her position as the team’s top scorer for the week. In a game against Arkansas, Watkins achieved a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds in just 21 minutes of play.
Her stellar performance continued in the regular-season finale against Tennessee, where she scored eight crucial points in the fourth quarter, aiding the team in securing victory. Watkins’ impressive display on the court has been instrumental in the Gamecocks’ recent success.
In addition to Watkins, several other Gamecocks have received recognition this season, with Kamilla Cardoso winning the award three times, and Te-Hina Paopao and Raven Johnson each claiming it once. MiLaysia Fulwiley was also named SEC Freshman of the Week during the season.
South Carolina, ranked No. 1/1, will continue their season with a game against Missouri on Thu., Feb. 8, at Colonial Life Arena. The matchup is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on SEC Network.
