Warming Shelter Opens Its Doors in Lexington to Combat Winter Chill
Lexington, S.C. – A Heartwarming Community Effort
This past weekend, Lexington residents banded together to provide a safe haven for those needing shelter from the bitter cold. Thanks to the dedicated team at Radius Church, nearly 60 individuals found warmth and comfort during freezing temperatures that plummeted well below freezing.
Pastor John Ptak shared that this was not the first time they’ve opened their doors to the community. For the past three years, the church has made it their mission to be a beacon of hope in trying times. “We’re service-oriented, and we strive to help our community as much as possible,” he expressed passionately.
How It All Came Together
When it comes to deciding whether to open a warming shelter, Pastor Ptak mentioned that it all hinges on the coldness of the weather and the community’s needs. Last weekend, they were equipped with about 50 air mattresses and 10 cots, along with the support of 5-10 volunteers working each night shift to ensure everyone was cared for.
This fantastic operation wasn’t done alone! Through partnerships with local organizations, they received valuable support. A nonprofit partner called C-PLACE teamed up with the church, along with the United Way, which graciously donated up to 60 brand-new sleeping bags for the night. Ptak remarked, “We coordinated amongst our own body of believers to work with the volunteers and get that staffed, but the love came pouring in.”
From food donations to people coming in just to lend a hand, the community banded together to create an environment focused on compassion and care. “People have come from all over to drop off supplies, to cook food, to learn names, and to love on those in need. It’s truly beautiful, especially during this time of year,” Ptak said, his face lighting up with joy.
The Heart of the Matter
This initiative is a testament to how caring individuals can come together in times of need. The pastor firmly believes that if another cold snap happens in the Midlands, the church will ready their arms once again. With the right resources in hand, they are determined to help those who need it the most.
“God loves us. He cares for us, and in the same way, we ought to care for one another,” Ptak added thoughtfully. “This is just a small way we can build a bridge to someone who might not know Christ yet. It’s more than just providing shelter; it’s about making connections and showing love.”
A Call to Action
With winter in full swing, the church is always on the lookout for volunteers and resources to help keep their sanctuary open for those in need. If you’re interested in being a part of this community effort, reaching out to Radius Church could be a wonderful way to contribute.
Every small act of kindness, whether it’s providing a meal, volunteering your time, or donating supplies, plays a significant role in making a difference. “Together, we can create a community where everyone feels the warmth of love and support,” Pastor Ptak concluded.
As the temperatures drop, let’s all come together, just like they have in Lexington, to wrap our arms around those in need. After all, it’s the spirit of community that keeps our hearts warm even in the chilliest of seasons!
