Wagener Residents Left Shocked After Shooting Incident

Wagener, SC – October 14, 2024

The peaceful small town of Wagener is feeling a mix of shock and disbelief following a violent incident that took place early Thursday morning at a local business. A 73-year-old man named Howard Fogle Jr. now faces serious charges including attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

According to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, the incident began when Fogle decided to visit a business on Pond Branch Road. He was reportedly checking on the turnaround time for a service agreement he had with the company. However, things took an unexpected turn during his visit. A disagreement broke out between Fogle and an employee. What happened next is truly alarming. Fogle allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired multiple shots at the employee, hitting him several times.

The employee was quickly transported to the hospital, and thankfully, medical professionals have indicated that he is expected to recover from his injuries. This news came as a relief to the local community, who are expressing their concern and support for the victim and his family.

“It’s just shocking to think something like this could happen here,” said one local resident. “Wagener is such a tight-knit community, and it’s hard to believe an incident like this took place at all.”

Swift Action by Law Enforcement

Thanks to a service agreement between the business and Fogle, along with security camera footage of the incident, authorities were able to quickly identify the shooter. Fogle drove away from the scene and returned to his home in Wagener, but police didn’t take long to track him down.

Aiken County deputies and Wagener police officers teamed up to locate him, making the arrest soon after the shots were fired. Sheriff Koon reported that Fogle was transferred into custody and is currently being held in the Lexington County Detention Center. The legal process is underway, and community members are anxiously awaiting further developments.

A Community Comes Together

The reaction from the Wagener community has been heartfelt. Many residents are offering words of support to the victim and his family, while also expressing their disbelief that such an event could take place in their quiet town.

“It just makes you realize how important it is to look out for one another,” shared a business owner in the area. “Wagener has always been a safe place for families and friends to gather, and we hope this doesn’t change that.”

Looking to the Future

As the police investigation continues, community leaders and residents alike are reflecting on ways to ensure safety and prevent similar events in the future. The local government is expected to hold discussions in the coming weeks to address community safety and preparedness.

For now, Wagener residents are left processing this tragic incident, holding onto hope for the recovery of the injured employee, and collectively finding ways to support one another in the aftermath. It’s times like these that remind us all how important community is in facing challenges, no matter how unexpected they may be.
