News Summary

Columbia is preparing for a significant $7 million expansion of the Vista Greenway, aiming to enhance connectivity between downtown and the BullStreet District. This initiative focuses on reducing car dependency and improving access for residents and visitors. Although funding isn’t fully secured, plans are underway to extend the Greenway further into popular neighborhoods and create new bike lanes to promote safety and walkability. With a completed stretch expected by 2028, this project is set to boost the quality of life and draw tourists to the city.

Columbia Gears Up for Exciting $7 Million Greenway Expansion!

Columbia is buzzing with excitement as plans take shape for a major expansion of the Vista Greenway! With a hefty price tag of $7 million, this project is all about enhancing connections between the lively downtown area and the popular BullStreet District.

More Access, Less Car Dependency

One of the key goals of this new development is to create an environment where residents and visitors alike can navigate the city without the need to hop in their cars. Right now, accessing certain downtown areas can feel like a chore if you’re not behind the wheel, but that’s about to change! The upgrades aim to make downtown corridors much easier to access, providing an inviting atmosphere for all.

Funding Plans in Motion

While the total funding isn’t completely locked in place just yet, there’s a request on the table to tap into a portion of Richland County’s extended penny transportation tax. Every bit counts, and this will hopefully pave the way for the funds needed to kickstart this friendly initiative.

The Current State of the Vista Greenway

For those who may not know, the *current* Vista Greenway stretches from Lady Street to Elmwood Avenue. But this isn’t the end of the line; an extension is on the way that will stretch the greenway to North Main Street through the charming Earlewood and Elmwood Park neighborhoods. This portion alone is estimated to cost around $3 million.

What’s Next?

Next up is an additional 1.6-mile track that will run from North Main Street down to Page Ellington Park situated within the BullStreet District. This new segment is projected to take about $4 million to develop. Exciting times are ahead!

The Timeline

As for when we can expect to see these dreamy plans come to life? Well, that’s still a bit murky. Completion timelines will heavily rely on securing funding and gaining access to necessary rights-of-way. If all goes smoothly, the city hopes to have the entire project completed by 2028.

A Welcoming Greenway

When all’s said and done, the completed Vista Greenway will span approximately 3.75 miles one-way. The journey so far has been gradual, with the original greenway, which started being built back in 2012, facing criticism for being a bit hidden and not connecting well with other routes. But not anymore! This new trail is seen as essential for cyclists and pedestrians, ensuring safe travel paths between bustling downtown spots.

Improving Quality of Life and Attracting Tourists

Local leaders are really prioritizing this greenway system, as they recognize the positive impacts it will have on the community’s quality of life and its potential in attracting tourists to the lovely city of Columbia.

Other Exciting Developments

But wait, there’s more! The plans aren’t stopping with the Vista Greenway. There’s also an extension of the Saluda Greenway and a brand-new bridge being constructed across the Broad River. And, with a generous $150,000 donation, a public art installation is set to jazz up the Lincoln Street Tunnel, making it a more inviting entry point to the Vista Greenway.

Making the Area Safer for Everyone

The Earlewood area is also getting a facelift with the completion of buffered bike lanes along River Drive, which will significantly enhance cyclist safety and connectivity. These new bike lanes will connect the Vista Greenway extension to the BullStreet District, as well as the Three Rivers Greenway. River Drive is looking to shine with 11-foot-wide traffic lanes and 5-foot-wide bike lanes, all separated by 2-foot striped buffers.

Answering Safety Concerns

This initiative perfectly aligns with the City of Columbia’s plans for improved walkability and bikeability, addressing long-standing safety concerns for every cyclist and pedestrian out there.

It’s a thrilling time for Columbia as these developments unfold, promising to reshape our city into a greener, friendlier place. Here’s to a future with better paths for a better community!
