This week, the Fall sports season in Vermont got underway with a host of thrilling games across various disciplines, showcasing the talents of our high school athletes. Fans and families packed the stands as teams took to the fields and courts in soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running.
In field hockey, the University of Vermont faced UC Davis in a nail-biting match that ended with a score of 3-2 after overtime. Marie Dijkstra was the hero of the game, netting the game-winning goal with just 42 seconds left in the first overtime period. On the other side, Katie Kim stood out with one goal, while Emma Giesting had an impressive 9 saves.
Meanwhile, South Burlington dominated against Rutland with a staggering score of 8-0. Sawyer Bailey led the charge with three goals, while Gwen Soper and others helped to maintain a solid defensive performance. Sammy Cacace from Rutland was outstanding in goal with 27 saves, but it wasn’t enough to stop South Burlington’s offense.
Essex also displayed their strength, winning against Mount Mansfield 5-0. Highlights included a two-goal performance from Bella Delphia and remarkable defensive efforts from Sophie Krauss, who only had to make one save.
In volleyball action, South Burlington beat Mount Mansfield with scores of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-20, showcasing their teamwork and composure on the court.
Looking ahead, many exciting matches are scheduled. Fans can catch various games taking place this weekend, including Rice at Mount Abraham on Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by a busy afternoon of competitions beginning at 11 a.m. The atmosphere is surely going to be electric as teams vie for victory.
As the season unfolds, coaches and team representatives are encouraged to report scores promptly to ensure everyone stays updated on the latest happenings. The community is rallying behind our athletes, who continue to push themselves both physically and mentally.
