Two Fatal Accidents on I-77 Leave Columbia Community in Mourning

Community Vigil for Healing

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Tragic Night on I-77

It was a heartbreaking evening in our beloved city of Columbia as two separate crashes on Interstate 77 left two families in mourning. The first incident occurred just after 9:19 p.m. when a car traveling south on the highway lost control near the 15 mile marker, close to the Percival Road exit. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the car veered off to the right side of the road and overturned. Tragically, a young woman named Shayna Stukes from Gaston, only 20 years old, was the front seat passenger in that vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community shocked and grieving. Investigators are still looking into the details surrounding the crash as they gather evidence and piece together what happened on that fateful night.

The Second Collision

If the first incident wasn’t enough to rattle the nerves, less than two hours later, another crash took place on I-77 north at around 11:12 p.m., near the 12 mile marker, which is close to the Forest Drive exit. This time, the collision involved both a sedan and a motorcycle. Eyewitness accounts indicated that both vehicles were traveling northbound when the motorcycle collided with the right rear corner of the sedan. In a harrowing turn of events, the motorcycle overturned and veered off to the right side of the road, resulting in catastrophic injuries for the bike’s rider.

The motorcycle driver has been identified as 37-year-old Robert Licata of Lugoff, who also succumbed to his injuries shortly after the crash. The sudden loss of life in such rapid succession has left the community reeling, and both the Highway Patrol and local authorities have urged everyone to drive cautiously and stay aware of their surroundings.

Community Response

The reactions from the community have been overwhelmingly supportive. Friends and family members of both Shayna and Robert have taken to social media to share their fond memories, expressing condolences and the love they had for the two individuals. Many locals have opened discussions urging for increased safety measures on the interstate, particularly around high-traffic areas.

This tragic night serves as a cautionary reminder of the importance of road safety. Here are a few tips to help keep all drivers safe:

  • Stay Alert: Always keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions, especially late at night when visibility can be reduced.
  • Speed Limits: Adhering to speed limits can make a significant difference in preventing accidents.
  • Weather Considerations: Always evaluate weather conditions before hitting the road. Rain, fog, or snow can make driving hazardous.
  • Never Drive Impaired: Alcohol and drugs can impair judgment. Always have a designated driver or utilize rideshare services when necessary.

Looking Ahead

As investigations continue, both accidents are still being scrutinized by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. They are encouraging anyone who might have witnessed the incidents to come forward to help provide crucial information.

The loss of Shayna Stukes and Robert Licata is an incredibly sad chapter for the communities of Gaston, Lugoff, and Columbia. It is our hope that these tragic events inspire each one of us to take road safety more seriously and to cherish our loved ones just a bit more. As we move forward, let’s keep the families of those affected close in our thoughts and hearts as they navigate this difficult time.
