COLUMBIA, SC — A Sweet Move Amidst Change
It’s a sunny day in Columbia, with temperatures hovering around a cozy 71°F and a gentle breeze making it perfectly comfortable to be outside. But amid this beautiful weather, a bittersweet change is on the horizon for some local food enthusiasts as a beloved brunch spot is making a big move.
The Toasty Hot Spot: A Local Favorite
The Toasty Hot Spot, known for its creative breakfast and brunch dishes, has been a staple in downtown Columbia for three-and-a-half years. This charming carry-out restaurant, situated at 1305 Lady St., has built a loyal following thanks to its inventive menu featuring everything from cheesy oxtail birria tacos to hearty Gullah grits bowls.
However, the restaurant now faces an unexpected transition as it will soon have to make way for a new development. Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union is planning to construct a large new headquarters, a sprawling 100,000-square-foot space that will stretch across the area where the restaurant currently resides.
A New Beginning for Sai Williams
Owner and founder Sai Williams is taking this opportunity to relocate The Toasty Hot Spot to a larger venue in the popular Five Points neighborhood. The new location, found at 2002 Greene St., was previously occupied by Mediterranean quick-service favorite Pita Pit. Williams feels a mix of emotions as she prepares for the transition.
“After a lot of tears and emotions, I’m just happy to be where we’re at now,” said Williams. She emphasizes the importance of this move not just for her, but for her team as well. “I have a new home for my employees,” she added.
All About the Vibes: What’s Coming Next
As far as the menu goes, patrons can continue to expect the delightful offerings they’ve come to know and love. The new space measures 1,400 square feet, allowing for indoor dining and a more extensive menu with enticing upgrades. Williams shared, “We’re going to offer everything that we already offer. We can just give way more quality service.” That means guests can also look forward to enjoying mimosas in a more relaxed dining atmosphere.
While the relocation wasn’t planned, it seems to be a timely move considering the ongoing changes within downtown Columbia. Williams reflected on the challenge of searching for a new location amidst ongoing development discussions. “Sadly, it wasn’t our intention to relocate… but the owner, I’m assuming, didn’t want my business there,” she explained.
Looking Ahead
Despite the hurdles faced, the reopening of The Toasty Hot Spot is set for November 4th. Williams and her team are inviting the community to visit and check out the new digs. For the latest updates and excitement ahead of the grand re-opening, guests can follow the restaurant’s journey on their dedicated Facebook page.
In the meantime, downtown Columbia is seeing more changes, with the South Carolina State Fair recently opening its doors, attracting food lovers with its array of delicious treats.
As Columbia continues to evolve, the spirit of community is alive and well, with restaurants like The Toasty Hot Spot paving the way into a bright future. Change is often bittersweet, yet it also brings fresh opportunities and new beginnings.
