Before that, he had been couch surfing, desperately trying to keep his head above water while finishing his education. His situation became precarious, and by January 2024, he was shoplifting food to survive.
That’s when Brian’s life took an unexpected turn. After being arrested for shoplifting food from a grocery store deli, he had a conversation with Deputy John Sanders of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office. Understanding the difficult circumstances Brian was facing, Deputy Sanders took the time to learn about his story. What came next would change Brian’s life.
Knowing that life in the military could offer structure and stability, Deputy Sanders, a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, suggested that Brian consider enlisting. Understandably, Brian was hesitant. The military was a big leap, and it was difficult for him to visualize how this could be a solution to his struggles.
Realizing the potential in this situation, Deputy Sanders took the initiative to reach out to a Marine Corps recruiter, Staff Sergeant Brent Latham. They arranged a meeting at a local Starbucks, a place where dreams can be brewed over a warm cup of coffee.
During that meeting, something clicked for Brian, and he decided to pursue enlistment in the Marines, even though he wasn’t entirely sure about his future. After passing the required mental and physical exams, he quickly enlisted, embarking on a path that would set the course for his life.
In May 2024, Brian graduated from basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, marking a significant milestone in his new life. Family and friends—including Deputy Sanders and Staff Sergeant Latham—cheered him on at the graduation ceremony. The pride and joy shone brightly as he donned his Marine uniform, finally feeling like he had a place in the world.
Now, Brian is nine months into his four-year contract with the Marines, training as a utilities systems technician at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
