In Chapin, S.C. the Lexington-Richland 5 school district is turning the tide in the face of teacher shortages by offering resources for individuals keen on starting a career in teaching. Thursday saw a gathering of these prospective teachers at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies in Chapin, eagerly exploring avenues to becoming state-certified educators.
“As you know, there’s a shortage of teachers in South Carolina, so it’s important that we beef up that teacher pool and try to get more students interested in what teaching can offer you,” explained Dr. Kim Neal, an Assistant Professor at Newberry College.

This event provided an unparalleled chance to sit down and navigate the sometimes complex road to certification,” said the district’s Director of Human Resources Dr. Reggie Wicker.

Faced with multiple paths to teacher certification, Kierra Walker, a hopeful participant, liked what she saw. “There’s so many different ways to get where you need to be. Going the traditional way, earning a Master’s degree, or even seeking online paths when finances are a concern.” she said, highlighting the variety of options to commence a rewarding career in teaching.
Glowing with optimism, Dr. Neal concluded, “Teaching is a wonderful career that changes lives. Stick with it, the future of children is in your hands.”
