Joyful Dance Celebration

Columbia’s Hidden Gem: Shag Dancing at Bill’s Pickin’ Parlor

If you ever find yourself in Columbia, South Carolina, a little local secret is waiting behind the barn-red doors of Bill’s Music Shop and Pickin’ Parlor. Every Thursday night, folks gather for a lively and welcoming shag dance party that has become a beloved tradition in the community. It’s a fantastic alternative to the bar scene, offering a safe space for young adults and college students to come together and enjoy some good, wholesome fun.

The Carolina Shag: A Dance for Everyone

You might be wondering, “What exactly is shag dancing?” Well, let’s break it down! The Carolina Shag is actually the state dance of South Carolina, and it originated in North Myrtle Beach. It’s characterized by a smooth and easy-going style danced in a slot, featuring just six counts. This simplicity makes it an accessible dance for beginners and seasoned dancers alike!

At Bill’s, Denton Williamson took the initiative back in 2016 to launch this weekly dance event. His aim was to create a space where young people could socialize without the pressures of alcohol. “Not everybody wants to go downtown and get trashed,” he shares. “Sometimes when other people are drinking, you put yourself at risk even if you’re not drunk. Here at Bill’s, you don’t need to worry about that.”

Creating a Safe and Fun Community

Denton started this event with a heart to connect people, especially young adults who often feel overlooked in traditional church settings. Many local students report feeling right at home among the friendly environment of Bill’s. “I was immediately welcomed with open arms,” shares MaryBeth Woodruff, a Columbia native and frequent attendee. “I made friends right away, and they have been my home away from home.”

This sentiment resonates with many young adults. In fact, a local Facebook group titled Cola AF (Alcohol-Free) has attracted over 700 members! It’s a fantastic community where people share ideas, events, and mocktail recipes, all while promoting the idea that you don’t need alcohol to have a great time.

The Bigger Picture: Alcohol Awareness

As enjoyable as it is to be out dancing, there is a darker side to college culture. Studies reveal that over half of college students aged 18 to 22 admit to drinking in the past month, and many report engaging in binge drinking. In light of this unsettling trend, local leaders are highlighting the need for safer social environments. Outgoing state Sen. Dick Harpootlian even proposed legislation requiring that any restaurant with a liquor license must derive at least 51% of its revenue from food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The safe haven that Williamson has nurtured at Bill’s can’t be understated. A space where young people can freely express themselves through dance, form lasting friendships, and connect without the distraction of alcohol is invaluable. It’s a refreshing twist on traditional nightlife and has come at the perfect time for those embracing a “sober-curious” lifestyle—a movement gaining momentum that invites whether we want to evaluate our relationship with alcohol.

A Thriving Community Event

Every Thursday, between 60 to 70 dancers flock to Bill’s for shag night, and the energy is infectious! With lights swirling and country music playing, anyone walking by can sense the excitement bubbling inside. Williamson expresses his gratitude, saying, “I’m very glad the Lord helped it. He blessed it.”

The last Thursday night splashes of color and sound can be heard long after the doors close, echoing the laughter and camaraderie shared throughout the evening. With so much going on in the world, places like Bill’s Music Shop and Pickin’ Parlor serve as a reminder that joy, love, and thriving community connections are within reach—no alcohol required. So, lace up those cowboy boots and get ready to hit the dance floor!
