Lexington, SC – The weather is sure looking a bit moody for Monday, September 30, 2024. The day begins with a cloudy morning that promises to follow with a mix of rain showers along the afternoon. Temperatures will hover around a warm 85°F, with light winds coming in from the southwest at about 5 to 10 mph. However, folks should definitely be prepared for the possibility of rain with a 50% chance as the day progresses.
In light of these weather conditions and the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which has caused significant disruption across the region, all schools in the Lexington School Districts—known as One, Two, and Five—as well as Richland School District One are closing their doors for both students and staff this Monday. All extracurricular activities are also canceled.
As many families are facing ongoing power outages and travel difficulties due to storm damages, school officials are prioritizing safety. Parents and students can expect schools and offices to remain closed throughout the day.
The good news is that District Five is stepping up to help out families during these tough times. They’ll be offering bag lunches for students on Monday. If your child is in District Five, you can pick up a lunch at one of the following locations: Irmo High School, Dutch Fork High School, or Chapin High School. Pickups are scheduled between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Just head to the bus loop at your zoned high school, and remember to bring a form of identification along with your student’s name so you can receive the lunch.
Similarly, three schools in Lexington Two will be offering free lunch meals for any youth aged 18 and under on Monday. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure that their children receive a meal.
In addition, the Richland One’s Nutrition Services team has planned to distribute meals for students from 9 a.m. to noon. Parents can take a drive through designated locations to collect meals for their kids, which is a fantastic way to ensure that students don’t go hungry during school closures.
Looking ahead, District Five is laying plans for a make-up day on February 17, 2025, though they will determine later whether that day will be held virtually or in-person. Meanwhile, Saluda County schools will also join the closure list.
On a different note, Richland Two and Newberry County have opted for an e-learning day on Monday, allowing students to continue their studies remotely. It seems that they are making use of technology to ensure that education is not disrupted further.
Lastly, all campuses of Midlands Tech will remain closed on Monday, while schools in the Kershaw County School District will operate on a two-hour delay.
As Monday rolls in with unpredictable weather and school closures, we encourage everyone to stay safe and be prepared for the day’s wet and cloudy conditions. Remember to keep an eye out for updates from your local districts and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need support!
