Weather and School Closures in Lexington Amid Hurricane Recovery

Good morning, Lexington! As we wake up today, we see the skies are mostly cloudy, and there’s a good chance we might see a few showers later on. The temperature is expected to hit a high near 85°F, with gentle winds blowing in from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph. The chance of rain is around 30%, so it’s a good idea to keep an umbrella handy just in case!

School Cancellations Across Lexington

In light of the recent storm impacts, several school districts in our area have decided to cancel classes for all students and staff today, September 30. This includes Lexington School District One, District Two, Lexington-Richland School District Five, and Richland School District One. Unfortunately, this means all schools and offices will be closed, and there will be no extracurricular activities taking place.

The decision to cancel school isn’t taken lightly; it’s been made in response to ongoing power outages and travel disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene. Many families are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm, and officials believe it’s best to prioritize safety for everyone.

Food Support for Families

But there’s a silver lining! If you’re a parent in District Five, listen up! There will be student feeding stations where you can pick up bag lunches for your kids today. Meals will be available at Irmo High School, Dutch Fork High School, and Chapin High School from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This service is focused on making sure our kids don’t go hungry during this time. Just remember to grab your lunch from the bus loop at your zoned high school, and bring a form of identification along with your child’s name to get the meals.

Additionally, three schools from Lexington Two will also be providing free lunch meals for any youth aged 18 and under today. How great is that? And Richland One will be doing their part too. Their Nutrition Services team will be distributing meals for students from 9 a.m. to noon Monday. Parents can simply drive through at designated locations and pick up meals for their children. It’s a terrific initiative to help our community during this challenging time!

Future School Plans and Community Updates

Looking ahead, District Five has mentioned plans to use February 17, 2025, as a makeup day for hazardous weather, which will be determined whether it will be a virtual day or held in person later on. Saluda County schools are also closing in response to the storm effects, while Richland Two and Newberry County will shift to e-learning for the day.

Furthermore, if you’re a student at Midlands Technical College, be aware that all campuses will be closed today. Meanwhile, Kershaw County School District will operate on a two-hour delay for all schools and offices. It seems everyone is being cautious and doing their best to make it through this storm recovery period.

Stay Safe and Connected

As we navigate this unpredictably wet weather and the impacts of Hurricane Helene, let’s remember to look out for each other and the needs of our families and friends. Make sure to check in on your neighbors, especially those who may need a little extra help during this time.

Let’s keep the feedback channel open! If you have any eyewitness accounts or stories to share about how you and your family are making it through this time, we would love to hear from you. Every little bit helps in keeping our community strong and connected.

Stay safe out there, Lexington! Don’t forget your umbrellas!
