SC Horror Convention Set to Return with Expanded Features and Family Fun on September 14

Family-Friendly Horror Fun

COLUMBIA — Get Ready to Celebrate the SC Horror Convention

Mark your calendars, folks! The SC Horror Convention is returning for its second year on September 14, and this year, it’s bigger and better than ever. Last year’s inaugural event was a hit, bringing together a crowd of 3,500 horror enthusiasts at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. This time around, the theme is aptly called “The Sequel.”

Exciting Features Awaiting Horror Fans

What can attendees expect? Well, for starters, there’s an expanded floor plan that promises to be buzzing with activity. With 175 artisanal vendors, horror fans will have plenty to browse through. From unique crafts to chilling memorabilia, there’s sure to be something for everyone. Not to mention, there will be celebrity panels featuring stars from beloved horror movies, giving fans a chance to ask questions and share their excitement.

The event organizer, J Moulton, is no stranger to the convention scene. Having run various fan conventions in New England, he fell in love with Columbia and its community. “When I moved here, I was surprised by how welcoming everyone was. It made me want to create something special for this amazing city,” he shares. Clearly, Moulton is determined to bring the joy of horror to Columbia, recognizing a significant demand in the area’s fandom culture.

Costumes, Contests, and Family Fun

The weekend will be packed with activities catering to all ages. There will be costume contests, a live haunt experience from Dark Castle Haunted Attractions, and an afterparty at the local favorite, Art Bar. Fans will also get to meet genre icons such as Dacre Stoker, the author of “Dracul,” Dave Sheridan from “Scary Movie,” and Felissa Rose, director of “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2.”

One of Moulton’s priorities is affordability. Weekend adult passes are just $20, while one-day passes cost $13. “We want everyone to feel like they can join in on the fun without worrying about their mortgage,” he explains. Furthermore, children’s passes are available for just $5 or can be free with the purchase of an adult pass! The family-friendly activities, called “Children of the Con,” will include decorating trick-or-treat bags, mask-making, and even a dance party.

Addressing Community Concerns

Soda City has embraced the SC Horror Convention, Moulton admits that some community members have voiced concerns. “We do receive a bit of hate mail saying we’re ‘evil’ and ‘going to hell,’” he laughs. “But I encourage everyone to give us a chance. It’s essentially a huge Halloween party!” He emphasizes that the convention promotes inclusivity and is intended to be a fun, whimsical, and safe space for all.

With plenty of creativity and a sprinkle of spookiness, Moulton is determined to fill a void in the local scene that has been long overdue. “We’re doing this with love, acceptance, and so much passion for the genre,” he stresses, excited to see what this year’s event will bring to Columbia.
