Starting January 6, 2025, a section of the Saluda Riverwalk Trail will temporarily close for one week to facilitate the construction of the Saluda Sky Ride Gondola Project. This expansion at Riverbanks Zoo involves an $80 million investment and promises new attractions. While the construction takes place, visitors can still enjoy other sections of the trail. Local leaders emphasize the importance of this project for community progress and outdoor enjoyment as the new year approaches.
Columbia residents, mark your calendars! Starting from January 6, 2025, a portion of the beloved Saluda Riverwalk Trail will be closed for a week as construction gets underway for the brand new Saluda Sky Ride Gondola Project. The construction is set to wrap up on January 13, 2025, so plan accordingly if you had a stroll along the trail in mind.
As part of the exciting development behind Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, a section of the Riverwalk extending from directly behind the zoo all the way to the east end of the Millrace boardwalk will be off-limits. With heavy machinery and construction activities ongoing, safety is the top priority; you wouldn’t want to find yourself dodging bulldozers, would you?
No need to worry, though! While that specific section will be closed, visitors can still enjoy the entire Millrace boardwalk. How about a lovely walk there instead? It’s still got that beautiful riverside charm!
For those eager to explore, you can also venture the remaining 1.5-mile section of the Saluda Riverwalk Trail heading west, upstream from the Riverwalk entrance. This area is open and ready for you to soak up some gorgeous views while getting in a bit of fresh air and exercise.
The construction is all part of a significant expansion at the Riverbanks Zoo, which encompasses an impressive $80 million investment. Not only will the gondola lift riders high above the Saluda River, but the expansion also includes the addition of a riverside restaurant, event space, and a primate garden! Now that is something to look forward to!
Local leaders have discussed development along the Saluda River for decades, and it’s finally taking shape. This gondola project, along with ongoing discussions about other attractions such as a proposed pickleball complex, shows that Columbia is on the move. It’s a great time to be a part of this vibrant community!
As you plan your visit, keep in mind that the closure follows recent challenges faced by the riverwalks in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which caused significant closures and damage in September 2024. While some parts of the West Columbia Riverwalk remain closed due to flooding, the Saluda Riverwalk remains a lovely option for those wanting to enjoy nature right now.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department encourages everyone to step outside and enjoy the parks as we welcome a new year filled with possibilities. What better way to kick off the year than by exploring our beautiful outdoor spaces?
So, even with the temporary closure on the horizon, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors in Columbia! Whether you prefer a stroll along the remaining Riverwalk sections or just want to keep an eye on the exciting developments at the zoo, there’s something for everyone. Keep an eye out for more updates as the gondola project progresses, and remember to adjust your walking routes during the temporary closures!
