Heads Up, Columbia Residents: Saluda Riverwalk Trail Closes for Construction

Mark Your Calendars!

If you’re a fan of the great outdoors and enjoy strolling along the picturesque Saluda Riverwalk, we have some important news for you. Starting on January 6, 2025, and running through January 13, 2025, a section of the beloved riverwalk will be temporarily closed. So, if your plans include soaking up some sun while enjoying the beautiful views at Columbia’s Saluda Riverwalk, you might want to change your route just a bit during that week.

What’s Happening?

The reason for this shutdown? Construction work related to the exciting Saluda Sky Ride Gondola Project at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. This project is a striking part of the zoo’s massive $80 million expansion known as the “Bridge to the Wild”. Yes, you heard it right!

When the closure begins, the affected section of the Riverwalk will start just behind the Riverbanks Zoo and extend all the way to the east end of the beautiful Millrace boardwalk. And don’t worry, there will be clear barricades set up to keep everyone safe by blocking access to the closed area.

What You Can Enjoy

Now, don’t throw away your plans just yet! Although a section of the trail will be off-limits, you can still access the Millrace boardwalk and enjoy a lovely stroll along the remaining 1.5 miles of the Saluda Riverwalk trail that stretches west and upstream. So grab your walking shoes and maybe even a friend and head on out!

The Exciting Future of Riverbanks Zoo

As mentioned, this construction is all part of the zoo’s exciting expansion project. The first phase of this massive operation has already brought us a new white rhino exhibit, a revamped aquarium, improved parking, and impressive renovations to the lion, tiger, and baboon grottos! With the additional gondola project, which is set to create 500 jobs and attract an extra 400,000 visitors annually, the zoo is positioning itself for an even brighter future. Not to mention that a charming riverside restaurant and event space are also in the works!

Keep Informed

It’s also worth mentioning that this construction comes on the heels of the damage sustained from Hurricane Helene last September, which affected some other riverwalk areas in the region. While the majority of the Saluda Riverwalk will remain open during the construction, a small part of the West Columbia riverwalk is still off-limits due to flooding from the storm.

Development discussions around the Saluda River have been circulating for quite some time among our local leaders. With this recent groundwork being laid, it feels like we might finally be moving in the right direction regarding this beloved area.

Plan Ahead

So, before you lace up your hiking boots and head out, remember to plan accordingly! Make sure you’re aware of the construction dates, and if you have a favorite spot near the closed section, it might be time to find a new favorite trail for the duration of the construction.

Columbia residents and visitors alike have a lot to look forward to, even with a little hiccup in our outdoor fun. Enjoy the riverwalk and stay excited for the incredible transformations coming to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden!
