Saluda, SC Mourns the Loss of Ralph Jackson McClendon
It is with heavy hearts that we share the story of a beloved member of the Saluda community: Ralph Jackson McClendon. He peacefully departed from this world on December 6, 2024, surrounded by his adoring family, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and devotion that will never be forgotten.
A Life Well-Lived
Born in Edgefield on April 22, 1947, Ralph was the cherished son of the late Ralph Thomas and Sadie Emma Jackson McClendon. From an early age, he developed a deep-rooted passion for cattle—a love that was nurtured in him as he grew up working alongside his father at various stockyards in the region.
Ralph’s educational journey began at Strom Thurmond High School, where he graduated in 1965. He didn’t stop there; his thirst for knowledge led him to Reppert Auctioneer School in Decatur, Indiana, followed by studies at Palmer Business School to equip himself to carry on his family’s tradition in the auction business.
Building a Home and Community
In 1986, Ralph took a significant step by founding Lake Murray Properties. He became the broker-in-charge and was passionate about developing land that would provide families with beautiful places to call home. Over the years, he successfully managed a staggering 32 developments across the Southeast, always seeing this work as a privilege and a responsibility.
Ralph’s commitment to his community didn’t stop there. He was a devoted member of St. John’s Methodist Church, where he combined his talents for gardening and fellowship. His faith was a central part of his life, shaping his values and guiding his actions.
A Family Man
Let’s talk about his family—his true pride and joy. Ralph met the love of his life, Dianne Herlong McClendon, in 1963. They tied the knot on August 19, 1967, and their partnership flourished over an incredible 57 years. Together, they raised a beautiful family, which includes their son, Patrick Herlong McClendon (Julie), and their two daughters, Tara McClendon Berry (Chad) and Amanda McClendon Merchant (Ray).
Ralph delighted in being a grandfather to eight grandchildren: Taylor Ralph Jackson (Savannah), John Alexander Berry (Taylor), Hannah Shirley Leopard (Dakota), Emma McClendon Ramirez (Gary), Thomas Zachary Berry, Anna Logan McClendon, Sarah Catherine Berry, and Joseph VanScyoc. He also reveled in the joy of four great-grandchildren, making his family tree even more special.
Remembering Ralph
Sadly, Ralph was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Carlee Thomas McClendon. To honor his life, funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on December 10, 2024, at St. John’s Methodist Church in Aiken, SC with his brother, Dr. Tim McClendon, officiating. The community gathered to pay their respects, reflecting on the impact Ralph had on so many lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requested that memorials be made to the Honduras Agape Foundation or other organizations meaningful to Ralph’s heart.
A Legacy of Love
With a spirit that could light up a room and a heart that knew no bounds, Ralph Jackson McClendon will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by many. His legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and those who will hear his story for generations to come.
