Rotary Club of Newberry Celebrates Success and Looks Ahead to New Projects
NEWBERRY — The Rotary Club of Newberry has a proud history of service and dedication to the community. Its work spans an array of local projects and has benefited institutions ranging from Boy’s Farm to the Pride Park of Newberry Disabilities Center to the playground area of the city’s new park. Its most recent accomplishment was a renovation project for The Free Medical Clinic, officially unveiled on March 13th with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Leadership Training for Youths
Among its many initiatives, the Rotary Club of Newberry actively invests in the youth of the county. Annually, it sponsors the costs of sending four exceptional individuals from the county’s high schools to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a leadership development experience held at Erskine College in June. The event aims at grooming these young individuals to take on leadership roles in the future.
New Revenue Sources
In an effort to fund these and other projects, the Club announced its plans to start selling advertising on WKDK. The Club urges members of the community to support their initiative, emphasizing that every dollar contributed goes towards local projects and is often supplemented with matching grants from Rotary International.
Service Beyond Borders
While the Club continues to serve Newberry diligently, its impact extends globally. Rotary International, of which Newberry’s club is a part, boasts a worldwide network of over one million engaged individuals undertaking persistent challenges in their communities on a global scale. Some of their recent noteworthy endeavors include providing medical supplies to Ukraine, training pre-school teachers in South Africa, and assisting in water provision to rural communities in Central America.
Polio Eradication Mission
However, Rotary’s most ambitious goal yet is the eradication of the Wild Polio Virus worldwide. A majority of Americans remain unaware of Polio’s continued existence, which Rotary seeks to rectify. To this end, Rotary has pledged to raise an astounding $50 million annually in efforts to eradicate Polio globally. It is hoped that with the combined efforts of their matching partners and other contributors, their thirty-year-long battle against Polio will soon come to a successful end.
