Celebrating a Century of Care: Riley’s Drugs Reaches 100 Years in Lexington
Lexington, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as one of its cherished institutions, Riley’s Drugs, commemorates a remarkable milestone—100 years in the business! On a beautiful September afternoon, the community came together to celebrate this century-long journey, not just as customers but as friends and family of the beloved pharmacy.
From Humble Beginnings to Community Cornerstone
Founded in 1924 by the late Dr. Sid Riley, the pharmacy started in the vibrant Red Bank Mill village. Dr. Riley, who rose from his orphaned beginnings in Batesburg, graduated from the MUSC College of Pharmacy and had a vision—not just to fill prescriptions, but to create a community hub. After facing a setback with a fire in the 1940s, which destroyed his first location, he quickly bounced back, rebuilding the pharmacy on Columbia Avenue in Lexington in 1947. His commitment to care was unwavering.
In 1967, Dr. Riley welcomed a young pharmacist named Bob Perry into the fold. “He checked my dad out before he hired him by asking him to measure out some talcum powder,” recalled Roberta Vining, who now owns the pharmacy. Roberta’s father accepted the offer to work and eventually partnered with Dr. Riley, taking over as the sole owner upon Dr. Riley’s passing in 1982.
Growing Through Generations
Roberta Vining’s ties to the pharmacy run deep; she began her journey at Riley’s while still in high school, influenced by both her father and Dr. Riley himself. Under their mentorship, she learned the importance of community care and exceptional customer service. “I don’t know any other way to take care of people,” Roberta said, echoing the values instilled in her from a young age.
The Celebration
As part of the massive celebration held earlier this month, Riley’s Drugs partnered with the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, receiving a warm welcome from the community. The Lexington Town Council even honored them with the key to the town! “Seeing our oldest attendee at 94 alongside a four-month-old patient really highlights the generations of care we have provided,” Roberta shared with pride.
A True Community Pharmacy
Today, Riley’s Drugs is much more than just a pharmacy. They offer a wide range of services, including vitamins, supplements, hormone replacement therapy, various vaccines, and even pet medications. “We aim to be a one-stop shop for our customers, making us their healthcare hub,” Roberta said, emphasizing their commitment to being a reliable support system for families in the community.

With so much history behind them, Roberta is understandably excited about what the future holds for Riley’s Drugs. “We have such a great history to look back on, but we’re eagerly looking forward to the next 100 years,” she remarked.
