Born on April 24, 1931, in Thomasville, North Carolina, Marr was the son of Jesse O. Marr and Ruth Blackburn Marr. He spent 75 cherished years married to his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Polk Marr. At the time of his passing, he was actively involved with the Chapin Christian Community Church, where he served in several significant roles including Finance Chairman, Official Board Chairman, Trustee, and Lay Leader. Additionally, he was a dedicated member of the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Throughout his professional career, which spanned 35 years in the life insurance industry, Marr began with Carolina Life and continued his career with Southland Life Insurance Company after a merger. He attained esteemed designations such as Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (CHFC), ultimately retiring as Regional Vice President of Southland Life.
Raymond Marr was also known for his diverse hobbies and skills beyond his professional life. He had a passion for woodworking, hunting, fishing, and playing golf. His community spirit was evident through his active participation in the Masonic Lodge and the Chapin Lions Club, where he further intensified his commitment to service and connection with others.
He is survived by his wife Betty of Chapin, SC; son Raymond (Ray) L. Marr, Jr. and his wife Sue of Columbia, SC; daughter Annette (Ann) Marr of Lexington, SC; and two grandsons, Raymond (Lee) L. Marr, III and his wife Jeni of Lexington, SC, and Jonathan (Jon) Edgar Marr and his wife Emily of Horse Shoe, NC. His family also expanded with five great-grandchildren: Lennox and Elliott of Lexington, SC, and Eleanor, Cecilia, and Clara of Horse Shoe, NC. Raymond Marr was predeceased by five brothers: Nathan, Bill, Vernon, Donald, and Wilfred.
As a way to honor his memory, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Chapin Christian Community Church at PO Box 237, Chapin, SC 29036, helping to continue Marr’s legacy of service and support to the community he cherished.
Marr’s life serves as an example of dedication to family, church, and community. His many years of service have helped shape the fabric of the Chapin area, leaving behind a heartfelt imprint on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
