Alert in Prosperity: Rabid Raccoon Spotted in Newberry County

Residents of Prosperity, South Carolina, are being urged to take precautionary measures after a rabid raccoon was found in the area. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health, this alarming discovery was made near the intersection of Chalet Road and Songbird Lane.

What You Need to Know

The raccoon was submitted for testing to the DHEC’s laboratory on December 5 and the results confirmed the presence of rabies just a day later, on December 6. Sadly, two people were reported to have been exposed to the animal, along with two dogs that were brought in from out of state.

Understand the Risks

Rabies is a serious disease that can affect all mammals, including pets and humans. Terri McCollister, the Rabies Program Director, emphasized the importance of avoiding contact with wild and stray animals and keeping your pets’ vaccinations up to date. “Refraining from handling wild and stray animals, and keeping your pets up to date on their rabies vaccination is the easiest way to protect you and your family from this deadly virus,” she stated.

Keeping Your Loved Ones Safe

Officials warn that any mammal has the potential to carry and transmit rabies. This makes it crucial to give wildlife a wide berth. “You can’t assume an animal has rabies just by the behavior it is displaying,” McCollister added. Symptoms in rabid animals can resemble those from other diseases or injuries, so identification can be tricky unless the animal’s brain is tested.

Recent Cases in Newberry County

This recent case marks the third instance of an animal testing positive for rabies in Newberry County this year alone! Residents should stay vigilant and keep an eye on their pets, especially in areas where wild animals may roam.

Take Action and Stay Informed

If you or your pet has had any contact with wild animals or any animal acting strangely, it is essential to seek medical advice immediately. The Department of Public Health encourages everyone to educate themselves on what rabies is, how it spreads, and what to do if exposed.

Conclusion

As a community, it’s important to look out for one another. Stay aware, keep your pets vaccinated, and remember: wild animals are best left alone!
