Residents of Prosperity, South Carolina, are being urged to take precautionary measures after a rabid raccoon was found in the area. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health, this alarming discovery was made near the intersection of Chalet Road and Songbird Lane.

The raccoon was submitted for testing to the DHEC’s laboratory on December 5 and the results confirmed the presence of rabies just a day later, on December 6. Sadly, two people were reported to have been exposed to the animal, along with two dogs that were brought in from out of state.
