Exciting Renovation of Historic Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building Set to Revitalize Columbia's Vista District

Exciting Changes Coming to Columbia with the Restoration of the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building!

Columbia is buzzing with excitement as the historic Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building, an iconic part of the Vista District, undergoes a remarkable multi-million-dollar renovation. Originally built in 1912, this charming building is set to be transformed into a vibrant modern workspace while still keeping all of its cherished historic features.

A Bit of Background

The journey to restore this 9,800-square-foot gem began when Jerry and Ben’s LLC, a local real estate investment firm, purchased the property back in 2021. Since then, they’ve collaborated with partners on a grand vision to breathe new life into this two-story facility, located right in the heart of Columbia’s West Gervais Historic District. For many in the community, this building holds a treasure trove of memories. It was once the go-to place for sweets and snacks, housing the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Company, which served candy and tobacco products for nearly a century!

A Walk Down Memory Lane

Some local folks might even remember when this building was famous for having the only mechanical elevator in the entire city!Back in the day, the space was filled with candy-making machines and large steel tables piled high with delicious treats. It’s a place that holds a special significance in Columbia’s history, and the developers are committed to keeping that essence alive.

What’s in Store?

The renovation is all about striking a balance between honoring the past and embracing the future. The project, led by Boyer Commercial Construction, aims to enhance the building’s infrastructure while preserving its original architectural features. The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of December 2024.

To support this ambitious project, the developers have secured the Bailey Bill—a state law that encourages preservation of historic buildings—as well as both federal and state historic preservation tax credits. These efforts demonstrate a commitment to revitalizing the area while keeping a strong connection to Columbia’s rich history.

New Beginnings

Once the restoration is complete, the upper floor will welcome Beam & Hinge LLC, a local custom website design and development firm, relocating from Columbia’s Main Street. What a way to celebrate their 10-year anniversary and the launch of a newly redesigned website!

The first floor will feature two separate units, each over 1,900 square feet, ideal for either office or retail spaces, opening up the possibilities for new businesses to join the vibrant Vista District. It’s set to become a go-to spot for those looking for a unique workspace or retail space with character.

Community Impact

According to Dan Stanton, the CEO of Beam & Hinge, the renovation is expected to bring a sense of pride and continuity to the Vista District. “The renovation of the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building and the relocation of Beam & Hinge are expected to foster a collaborative environment for our associates and clients,” he shared.

This project not only preserves a piece of Columbia’s architectural history but also contributes to the growth of the local business community. The partnership between developers, architects, and local businesses promises a bright future for the area, where old meets new spectacularly.

In Conclusion

The transformation of the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building is an exciting chapter for Columbia, echoing the city’s past while paving the way for its future. The combination of historic charm with modern conveniences is just what the Vista District needs, and we can’t wait to see what this revitalized space will bring to our lovely city!
