On the evening of January 4, 2025, the charming city of Newberry, South Carolina, rolled out the red carpet for the highly anticipated Carolinian Society’s Annual Ball. This glamorous affair took place at the historic Old Newberry Hotel, setting the stage for a night filled with elegance and celebration. The air was buzzing with excitement as guests arrived, all donned in their finest attire to mark this special occasion.
The festivities kicked off at 8 p.m. with an elegant reception that welcomed guests and marked the official presentation of this year’s debutantes. Among the esteemed members of the evening was Mr. Frank James Downs, who did the honors of introducing the young ladies stepping into society. This year, four debutantes graced the evening, highlighted by the lovely Miss Kelsey Lane Buckley.
As the room filled with laughter and chatter, it became clear that the night was destined to be a memorable one. But the excitement didn’t stop there! Guests were treated to a wonderful Grand March, which had everyone on their feet, gleefully admiring the beautiful debutantes as they made their way to the center of the ballroom.
Miss Kelsey Lane Buckley stole the spotlight as she was presented by her grandfather. Kelsey is the proud daughter of Ms. Haley Chandler Bellows Buckley and the eagerly awaited granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Howard Bellows, both of whom hail from Newberry. There’s more to Kelsey’s lineage as she is also the great-granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Robert Harbison of Columbia, alongside the late Mr. and Mrs. Howard Arthur Bellows from both Grass Valley, California, and Olivia, Minnesota.
As further testament to her family heritage, Kelsey was gracefully escorted by Mr. Samuel George Hawkins, rounding out an enchanting night for the debutantes and attendees alike.
The Carolinian Society hosts such prestigious events with a dedicated board of governors, which includes figures such as Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Paul Bayuk, Dr. and Mrs. John Campbell Lake, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Sean Frank Pomeroy, and Dr. Charles Clinton Harshaw. This year’s ball was chaired by the delightful couple, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Eric Quattlebaum, whose efforts helped bring this enchanting evening to life.
The Ball Committee, chaired by Mr. and Mrs. Frank James Downs, worked tirelessly alongside their fellow members, including Mr. and Mrs. James Channing Franklin and Mr. and Mrs. Kevin William Whitesides. Their enthusiasm and commitment to carrying on the tradition of the Carolinian Society shone brightly throughout the event.
As the evening unfolded, guests indulged in delightful dancing, sumptuous dinner, and camaraderie galore. It was a magical night, filled with old friends reconnecting and new friendships blooming under the soft glow of the chandeliers.
