Newberry Police Department Investigating Homicide

NEWBERRY — Officers with the Newberry Police Department were called to the scene of a shooting incident on the evening of Wednesday, April 10, 2024. The grim event occurred around 9:20 p.m. in the immediate vicinity of Wise St. bordering Benedict St. in the city of Newberry, South Carolina.

Victim Identity Confirmed by Coroner

Newberry County Coroner, Laura Kneece, confirmed the identity of the deceased as 35-year-old Corey Wadsworth. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Wadsworth suffering from a gunshot wound. Newberry County EMS promptly transported Wadsworth to Newberry County Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Criminal Charges Laid Against The Suspect

Keeman Aljamek Bates, the suspect in the fatal shooting, turned himself into authorities shortly after the incident without causing any further harm or trouble. Charges against Bates include Murder, Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime, Breach of Peace High and Aggravated, Unlawful Carry of a Pistol, and Possession of a Pistol by a Prohibited Person. Bates is being held at the Newberry County Detention Center, awaiting a bond determination made by a Circuit Court judge.

Isolated Incident Poses No Threat To The Public

Local officials assured that the deadly incident was isolated, thus not posing any additional danger to the public. Preliminary findings of the investigation corroborate this assertion, making it clear that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but a singular incident involving specific individuals.
