Shocking Crime in Newberry County: Four Arrested in Connection with Fatal Shooting

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — In a shocking incident that rattled the tranquil streets of Newberry County, four individuals have been taken into custody following a tragic shooting that claimed the life of Kier Leon Marsh and left another person seriously injured. The events unfolded on the evening of Thursday, December 5, 2024, on Green Meadows Drive, leading to a wave of fear and concern in the community.

Arrests Made Quickly

Authorities wasted no time making arrests. The suspects were apprehended during a series of well-coordinated operations. First up were Glazariq Diaz Garcia, 20, and Matthew Neal Epps, 24, who were detained on Folk Road in Newberry on Friday afternoon. As if that wasn’t enough action for one day, Austin Adam George Stanley, 20, from nearby Whitmire, was also caught in Myrtle Beach that Friday night. Finally, Danny Isaiah Gray, 24, also from Whitmire, was arrested after being located on Mill Street, where he was hiding from law enforcement.

Charges Galore

All four individuals are facing serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and burglary, among others. In addition to these main suspects, two other individuals—Parrish Jeral McWatters, 34, and Stephanie Heather Mayer, 28—were arrested for allegedly harboring a fugitive. During the search for Gray, deputies discovered him cleverly concealed beneath a pile of clothes inside a residence.

A Terrible Turn of Events

According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when Garcia allegedly occupied the Green Meadows Drive residence before Epps, Stanley, and Gray arrived wearing ski masks. They forced their way inside and initiated a violent assault with the aim of robbing the occupants. Sadly, during this brutal attack, the homeowner and Marsh were both wounded. While Marsh was unable to survive, the homeowner was quickly rushed to a trauma center for treatment. Authorities later revealed that it appeared nothing was stolen during this shocking robbery attempt.

Law Enforcement’s Response

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster expressed his dismay over the senseless act of violence, emphasizing the profound impact on not just the victims but their loved ones as well. He remarked, “One person is dead, and another is grievously injured, while six others have had their lives altered for absolutely nothing.” This criminal act has undoubtedly left many in the community feeling unsafe and questioning the motives behind such brutality.

Community Impact

As law enforcement officials continue their investigation, there’s a sense of unease lingering in Newberry County. The local community, usually known for its friendly atmosphere, is now facing unfortunate ramifications from this shocking event. Authorities have reassured the residents that they are doing everything within their power to bring justice for the victims and to ensure safety and security in the area.

In a related note, it was reported that during the arrest of Gray, a Newberry County deputy suffered injuries when bitten by a pit bull that was present in the home. Additionally, three minor children were discovered in the residence during this chaotic scene, prompting further charges against McWatters and Mayer for unlawful neglect of a child.

Looking Ahead

As this story unfolds, the residents of Newberry County hope for a swift resolution and healing from this traumatic event. The focus now, however, remains on supporting those affected, honoring Marsh’s memory, and ensuring that justice is served in this tragic situation.
