Candidates for Newberry County District 3 School Board Share Vision and Priorities Ahead of Election

Columbia, S.C. – Candidates Discuss Priorities for Newberry County District 3 School Board

On the sunny afternoon of Thursday, candidates vying for the Newberry County District 3 School Board gathered to share their vision and priorities with the community. The atmosphere was friendly and engaged as both candidates spoke about their dedication and qualifications for the role.

Current Chair Seeking Re-election

Lucy Anne Meetze, the current chair of the school board, is on her campaign trail once again, hoping to secure re-election for the sixth time. She brings with her an impressive two decades of experience in public education. With a warm smile, Meetze said, “I’m not saying that we’re perfect, because no district is, but I would certainly like the opportunity to continue to serve.” It’s clear that her love for education runs deep, particularly given her family’s long history within South Carolina’s public school system.

“My family has actually been teaching in public schools in South Carolina for over 100 years,” Meetze proudly declared. She went on to mention her grandparents, all of whom dedicated their lives to teaching, emphasizing how her roots in education have shaped her values and priorities.

Challenger Brings Classrom Experience

Opposing her is Leila Caldwell, a former teacher and principal in Newberry, who is making her third bid for a seat on the school board. Caldwell brings firsthand knowledge of the classroom and an understanding of the needs of educators. “I ran the last full cycle, and with me being in the classroom, I know what the needs are,” she said earnestly. “I know how to work with teachers. I know how to listen to their concerns, and, to be honest with you, I think it’s time for a change.”

Caldwell emphasized her familiarity with the eight elementary schools in the district, stating, “With my supervision background, I feel that I have a lot to offer. I am in and out of these schools; I see the students, I see the teachers, and I know their concerns.”

Highlighted Qualifications

Both candidates were eloquent about their qualifications and passion for education. Meetze mentioned, “I have experience as a parent. I’m gaining lots of current experience with my grandchildren enrolled in our schools. I have experience as a teacher. I have the accounting and business background to understand the budget and all the budget decisions that school boards have to make.” It’s evident that her multifaceted background gives her a well-rounded perspective on the issues faced by the district.

Caldwell also highlighted her unique qualifications, saying, “I bring to the table my hands-on experience in education management and leadership.” This combination of personal and professional experience has given her insights into the school environment that she feels are crucial for making informed decisions.

Shared Goals for Improvement

Despite their differing approaches, both Meetze and Caldwell expressed a common goal: to improve teacher salaries and retention rates. They recognize that keeping quality educators in the classroom is essential for student success. Additionally, both candidates emphasized the importance of enhancing safety measures on school grounds, a priority that resonates with many parents and educators alike.
