New Hotel in Columbia: A Dream Comes to Life
Columbia is buzzing with excitement as students from the University of South Carolina (USC) helped kick off the construction of the Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista on November 14! The event took place at 1001 Senate Street, where hotel leaders, city officials, and a host of USC alumni came together to witness the groundbreaking ceremony. This event was surely a sight to behold as applause filled the air, marking the start of something truly special in the heart of our city.
A New Vision for Hospitality
The upcoming Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista is more than just your average hotel. It’s a dream that began with Rick Hayduk, who wanted to create job opportunities for people with disabilities. Inspired by his two children who have Down Syndrome, Rick teamed up with hotel industry veterans Rich Davies and Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney to launch the first Shepherd Hotel in Clemson back in 2022. Now, they’re bringing the vision to Columbia, transforming the historic Columbia Central Fire Station into a boutique hotel featuring 59 rooms.
Building on Educational Partnerships
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the partnership with USC’s CarolinaLIFE program and the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Just like in Clemson, the Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista aims to empower students with intellectual disabilities to acquire the skills they need to thrive in a career setting. It’s all about creating a supportive environment where students can shine and gain valuable experience!
A Celebration of Community and History
During the groundbreaking ceremony, there was a fantastic panel discussion that included insights from Hayduk, Davies, Raines Managing Partner David Tart, and USC’s very own Football Coach Shane Beamer. Even Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann was present to show his support for this project that promises to enrich our community.

Construction Plans and Future Endeavors
The hotel is set to be constructed by Mashburn Construction, a well-known player in the area, with design work by Garvin Design Group. Lee Mashburn, president of Mashburn Construction, expressed pure excitement about working on this project, highlighting its blend of historic preservation and modern hospitality. Can you believe it? Columbia is getting its very own Shepherd Hotel, just a stone’s throw away from Mashburn’s headquarters!
