Myrtle Beach Mourns the Loss of Elwin Miles
In a heartfelt moment for the residents of Myrtle Beach, the passing of Elwin Miles at the age of 73 has left a significant void in the community. A prominent businessman and passionate golfer, Miles succumbed to Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition that affects the nervous system, leaving behind a legacy that is hard to match.
A Pillar of the Myrtle Beach Golf World
Over the past two decades, Miles was instrumental in the growth and development of the Myrtle Beach golf market. His journey in the golfing realm began with his role as director of store development for Waccamaw Pottery, where he spent 13 years. Under his watch, Waccamaw Pottery reached the impressive milestone of becoming the largest shopping complex in the Grand Strand. This was just the beginning of Miles’ profound influence on the area.
After his tenure at Waccamaw, he transitioned to becoming the Chief Operating Officer of Burroughs & Chapin Co., where he served for seven years. During this time, the company’s golf operations saw substantial expansion, setting the stage for the future of golf in Myrtle Beach.
Leading Mystical Golf
From 2003 to 2017, Miles made a mark on Mystical Golf, a collection of three acclaimed golf courses: The Witch Golf Links, Man O’War Golf Club, and The Wizard Golf Links. His leadership helped propel these courses into the spotlight, attracting golf enthusiasts from near and far. Not one to rest on his laurels, Miles founded MM Golf and Travel in 2017 with his son Mackey. This venture introduced a variety of golf tournaments and enticing golf package deals, further enriching the local golf culture.
A Life Beyond Business
Miles wasn’t just about business; he was a dedicated family man and an avid golfer who played left-handed. He won the gross championship at the 2007 National Father & Son Team Classic, showcasing his talent and love for the sport. Ironically, he met his wife, Jackie, through a singles golf dating website, and their union flourished, leading to a happy marriage about a year later.
Beyond golfing and business, he had a strong commitment to the community. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Conway and later attended Ocean View Baptist Church, where he took the initiative to lead various community service efforts. Not just a man of faith, Miles authored three faith-based books available on Amazon and organized food drives to support local food banks, showing his compassionate nature.
Remembering Elwin Miles
Elwin Miles is survived by his beloved wife Jackie, son Mackey, stepson Lee Bowman, grandchildren, and his brother Danny Miles. As the community reflects on his contributions and the impacts he made, many will gather to pay their respects.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday at Ocean View Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, where friends and family will have the chance to honor his life and legacy during a visitation following the service.
Though Elwin Miles may have departed, his influence on Myrtle Beach and the golf community will always be remembered. His dedication, friendly demeanor, and passion for the game and community are legacies that will continue to inspire many.
