Mount Pleasant Launches New Recycling App for Residents

Mount Pleasant, SC – A new mobile application aimed at simplifying recycling efforts for South Carolina residents has been officially launched. The Recycle Here SC app, created through a partnership between the SC Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), PalmettoPride, and the SC Beverage Association, is designed to provide comprehensive details about recycling locations and guidelines across the state.

Launched on November 15, 2024, the app comes just in time for America Recycles Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of recycling and its benefits for the environment. This innovative tool aims to address the prevalent issues of confusion regarding recyclable materials and contamination in recycling bins.

Who Is Involved?

The launch event featured several key figures, including Lt. Governor Pamela S. Evette, Myra Reece, the Interim Director of SCDES, and other representatives from the partnering organizations. Their presence underscores the collaborative effort to enhance recycling practices in the state. “With the launch of the Recycle Here SC app, we’re equipping South Carolinians with a powerful tool to make recycling more accessible and efficient,” stated Lt. Governor Evette, emphasizing the app’s potential impact on reducing litter.

What Does the App Offer?

The Recycle Here SC app consolidates essential information regarding recycling in one user-friendly platform. Key features include:

  • A searchable database of recycling locations and programs within each county.
  • Filters for users to sort potential recyclables based on their specific needs.
  • Notifications for special collection events such as household hazardous waste days and electronic recycling opportunities.
  • Educational resources on recycling, composting, and litter prevention efforts.
  • Guidelines for the proper disposal of various materials.

This app sets itself apart from county-specific applications by focusing on statewide recycling information, making it particularly beneficial for areas where no such app currently exists. As Myra Reece pointed out, it is crucial for residents to recognize the differences in local recycling programs. “Local recycling programs can vary considerably on which items they’re able to collect,” she explained.

Why Is This Important?

The need for such an app stems from significant challenges faced by recycling initiatives nationwide, primarily stemming from high contamination rates in recycling bins. When non-recyclable items are mistakenly placed in a recycling container, it increases the overall cost of recycling programs and complicates processing efforts.

Ultimately, the goal of the Recycle Here SC app is to bolster recycling rates across the state, contributing to South Carolina’s ambitious target of recycling 50 percent of its municipal solid waste by the year 2030. The app will help residents make informed choices, reduce confusion, and ensure the correct items are placed in recycling bins, subsequently improving the quality and value of recyclables.

Accessibility and Future Plans

For residents who may not use mobile apps, the SCDES continues to maintain its Where to Recycle website, providing detailed listings of recycling locations and guidelines. This dual-access approach ensures that all residents have access to necessary recycling information.

The funding for the development of the app was provided through the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, supplemented by support from PalmettoPride and the SC Beverage Association. With the Recycle Here SC app in action, South Carolinians can look forward to a more organized and effective recycling process, fostering a cleaner environment for future generations.
