Sumter County, S.C. — A tragic incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a motorcyclist lost his life after colliding with a truck on U.S. 378. The accident took place around noon, near Brewington Road, according to authorities from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Investigating officer Corporal David Jones reported that the motorcyclist was riding a 1990 Honda motorcycle and was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes at the time of the crash. The motorcycle collided head-on with a 1985 Oshkosh commercial truck that was traveling in the correct direction.
The rider of the motorcycle has been identified as 73-year-old Ray Prosser from Florence County. Sadly, he succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck involved in the collision was fortunate and reported no injuries from the incident.
The crash took place on U.S. Highway 378, a major route in the area, near Brewington Road. This location, often busy during midday hours, is now the focus of an ongoing investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
As the Highway Patrol continues their investigation, they are looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident, including why the motorcyclist was traveling in the wrong lanes. Coroner Robbie Baker stated that an autopsy for Prosser is scheduled for Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
