In a thrilling wrap-up to the 2024 high school golf season, the Midlands community has been buzzing with excitement over the standout players who rocked the greens this year. It’s been a season full of swing, skill, and plenty of impressive scores! With players showcasing their talents across numerous tournaments, it’s clear that the future of golf in the Midlands looks brighter than ever.
Leading the charge this year is Chase Cline from Chapin, who has been named the Player of the Year. Cline, a senior, ended the season with an impressive scoring average of 70.05 and notched up four medals in various events. His performance peaked at the Class 5A state tournament, where he battled through a nail-biting playoff but ultimately secured a runner-up finish. His consistent skill earned him all-state honors, and it’s no surprise he’s signed on to hit the greens at Western Carolina next season.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! The Readers’ Choice Player of the Year award went to Connor Wolfe from Westwood, and he certainly earned the hearts of many with his incredible performance. This seventh-grader is already making waves, finishing his season with a scoring average of 70. Wolfe also qualified as an individual for the Class 4A state tournament, where he tied for second! Watching him play, it’s clear that he’s definitely one to watch in the coming years.
Meanwhile, Charles Cauthen from AC Flora has been nothing short of remarkable. This junior averaged 70.63 strokes per game and excelled in six individual matches, earning four all-tournament honors. His efforts culminated in being named the Region 5-4 Golfer of the Year. It’s safe to say he’s geared up for a successful stint at Kentucky next year!
Another notable player is Teddy Dunn from Gray Collegiate. This junior finished the season strong with a 71 scoring average, clinching victories at both the Blazer and Yellow Jacket Invitationals. Dunn didn’t stop there; he wrapped up his season by finishing fourth in the Class 2A state tournament and is committed to play at Mercer.
The Midlands league has also seen a flurry of other talented players. Coleman Ferguson from AC Flora made quite an impact as well, coming in with a scoring average of 71 and earning all-state honors to boot. Not to mention, he’s signed with Coastal Carolina for next year! Fellow senior Gage Gaskins from Lexington is also in the spotlight with a scoring average of 75, and he’s made it to the North-South All-Star matches!
Bo Hammersla, a sophomore from Hammond, also deserves a shoutout with his scoring average of 72; he’s secured all-state honors at the SCISA state tournament. And let’s not forget about Pierce Hutchinson from Heathwood Hall who has been climbing the ranks with an impressive average of 37.1 for nine holes!
More names to remember include Harrison James from Chapin, who also managed a stunning average of 72.94 and finished tied for eighth in the Class 5A state tournament. There’s definitely no shortage of talent among young golfers in the Midlands area!
