Join Midland in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease!
Hey there, Midland! We’ve got some sunny news for you this week. As the weather warms up with a delightful high around 65°F and light winds blowing from the north, it’s the perfect day to step outside and make a difference. This Saturday, October 19, our lovely city will host the annual Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s at beautiful Segra Park, located in the BullStreet District at 1640 Freed St.
Get Ready to Walk!
The excitement is building, with over 500 participants already registered. The goal? To raise an impressive $225,000 for our community in Columbia. Why is this important? Because Alzheimer’s disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and nearly 7 million Americans are living with it right now. What’s even more staggering is that over 11 million family members and friends are providing care for those affected by this heartbreaking condition.
Facing Alzheimer’s Together
In South Carolina alone, more than 112,500 individuals are grappling with Alzheimer’s, and approximately 219,000 caregivers are out there supporting them. That’s where you come in, Midland! By participating in this event, you play a vital role in raising awareness and funds that will support families who are facing the challenges of living with this disease.
But before we lace up our sneakers and hit the two-mile course, there’s a very special moment for all participants. The Promise Garden Ceremony will take place, bringing everyone together to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s. During this touching experience, participants will carry brightly colored flowers. Each color represents a different personal connection to the disease, symbolizing our solidarity in this fight. It’s truly a moment that brings everyone together—tears, joy, and strength mixed into one.
Hope on the Horizon
Ashton Houghton, the Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association’s South Carolina Chapter, shares heartfelt insights: “This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that can change the course of the disease.” Your participation can bring hope to families who need support today while also pushing for research that could lead to more treatments and an ultimate end to Alzheimer’s.
