Multiple Incidents Shake the Community of Lexington, S.C.

Lexington, S.C., found itself in a bit of turmoil over the past weekend, with a couple of alarming incidents making headlines and keeping the police on their toes. With the new year just around the corner, residents were met with a rough start that has everyone talking.

A Crash on Sunset Boulevard to Ring in the New Year

On New Year’s Eve, around 9 p.m., a **dramatic collision** occurred between an SUV and a motorcycle on Sunset Boulevard, specifically at the intersection of Coventry Drive. The crash was serious enough to prompt law enforcement to rush to the scene, where the inbound lanes of Sunset Boulevard/US-378 were quickly closed off, leaving many drivers needing to take the long way around through the Home Depot parking lot—definitely not the kind of route anyone wanted to be taking as they ushered in 2023.

The motorcyclist was swiftly transported from the scene by emergency medical services (EMS), which has certainly raised concerns within the community. As for the driver’s condition of the SUV, the details remain unclear, leaving many residents wondering what exactly happened. Reports indicate that speeding and a failure to yield the right of way might have played significant roles in the crash, but it remains uncertain which vehicle actually carries the burden of blame.

Shooting Shakes Fast-Food Restaurant

Bojangles restaurant in Lexington County. This incident unfolded on Saturday around 5:30 p.m. at the busy intersection of 12th Street and Augusta Road, sending a wave of shock through the area. Thankfully, the injuries sustained were reported to be non-life-threatening, but two individuals still required treatment for their wounds.

Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old named Marterius Byrd on charges that include two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Byrd is currently being held in the Lexington County Detention Center with no chance of bail. Meanwhile, investigators are still on the hunt for a second suspect connected to the shooting. As of now, we’re left in the dark regarding both the identity of this individual and potential charges that may come their way.

Adding to the unease, there is no concrete information available about the motive behind the shooting, nor is it known whether the shooter had any prior relationship with the victims. As the investigation rolls on, police are calling upon the community for any tips or leads they might have, reminding everyone that staying vigilant can help keep our neighborhoods safe.

Fire at White Knoll High School

If that wasn’t enough, a large fire broke out at White Knoll High School in another incident that evening. Footage captured behind the school’s gym revealed a blaze classified as a brush and structure fire. Thankfully, no reports have surfaced about any substantial damage to the school’s facilities yet, but officials are working diligently to assess the situation and determine the cause and extent of the fire.

It seems like the weekend took a turn for the worse for many in the community, with each incident evoking serious concern. From traffic troubles to violence and fires, Lexington has seen its fair share of chaos to kick off the new year. Here’s hoping the rest of 2023 brings more peaceful and friendly news for everyone in town!
